The 2013 European Mountain Bike and Trials Championships took place from June 20 to 23, 2013 in Bern , Switzerland . The races in the Olympic discipline Cross Country were held on Bern's local mountain, Gurten . The Swiss Bike Trophy has been held there since 2004. The team race and the eliminator were held in the middle of the city of Bern, right in front of the Bundeshaus , the seat of the Swiss government. The trial sections were also spectacular . These were integrated into the old town of Bern. The highlight was the final section in the old Bernese bear pit .

The organizer of the European championships was the Association Mountain Bike & Trial European Championship 2013. The chairmen were Thomas Binggeli (CEO of the Swiss bike manufacturer BMC) and René Walker (long-time organizer of the MTB Swiss Cup, former Vice-President of Swiss Cycling and manager of MTB world champion Ralph Näf ). Binggeli was responsible for the financing and Walker for the organization. A total of over 250 volunteers were on duty.

A total of over 500 athletes from 31 European nations took part in the European championships. 40,000 visitors attended the races in the city and on the Gurten. Never before has a mountain bike event in Switzerland been attended by so many fans. The budget for the event was just under 1 million Swiss francs.

The European Championship opened on June 20th at 7 p.m. with the team race. Followed by the official opening address by Government Councilor Andreas Rickenbacher.

The Switzerland indeed took six medals, but remained without a gold medal.

The feedback on the organization of the European Championships was very positive. Thomas Frischknecht spoke of the best mountain bike race ever held in Switzerland. The specialist and daily press were also full of praise.

The MTB & Trial EM 2013 in Bern was also the first climate-neutral championship in Switzerland. The green button with the inscription "Climate Minded" is prominently placed in the EM logo.
