Location of Mountlake Terrace in Snohomish County

Mountlake Terrace is a city ( City ) in Snohomish County in the State of Washington . It is a northern suburb of Seattle and is north of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park , east of Edmonds , south of Lynnwood and west of Brier . Its southern border coincides with the northern border of King County . The Interstate 5 runs north to south through the city and has three exits within the city. As of the 2010 United States Census , Mountlake Terrace had 19,909 residents.

history

The location of Mountlake Terrace was densely forested in the mid-19th century and formed part of the traditional gathering and hunting area of the Snohomish . The Puget Mill Company of Port Gamble procured the land in 1862. By 1900, most of the land in southern Snohomish County had been deforested. The Pope & Talbot Company , the successor to the Puget Mill Company , divided the area into 10 acres (4 hectares), which were sold as "chicken farms". These plots were sold to farmers who kept poultry, mink, or chinchillas with moderate success. An intercity line between Tacoma and Everett was built in 1910, making the farms more accessible. However, many of these failed during the Great Depression , and the railway line was abandoned in 1939.

Part of the area was used as an airfield by the German government during World War II . At the end of the war, the government stopped flight operations. The building contractors Albert LaPierre and Jack Peterson bought the abandoned airbase in 1949 and began building Schalstein houses. They named their construction project "Mountlake Terrace" because they could see both Mount Rainier and Lake Washington from some parts of the construction area and the old runway looked a bit like a terrace.

Becoming a city

In the area between the 244 th and 216 th Street SW and the 48 th and 68 th Avenue W lived in 1954 more than 5,000 people. The existing infrastructure was overwhelmed by this unplanned growth. Some people waited a year for a community phone line, roads were unpaved, and sewage was taken from decentralized septic tanks. The nearest police station was in Everett, 15 mi (15 mi) away. One resident, Patrick McMahan, became frustrated by these conditions and organized the Mountlake Terrace Study Committee , which led the campaign for city recognition. The election carried out on November 23, 1954 supported the recognition (English "incorporation") with 517 to 483 votes. In the same vote, a five-member city council was elected. The council held its first session on November 24 and elected Gilbert "Gil" Geiser, a 35-year-old hardware store owner, as Mountlake Terrace's first mayor. Geiser had to lend the new city five dollars so that the papers on the recognition could be put on file. With this taking of files, Mountlake Terrace officially became a so-called “third-class city” on November 29th, a classification simply according to size (at that time between 1,500 and 10,000 inhabitants).

Early years and growth

The population of Mountlake Terrace almost doubled between 1950 and 1960 and then almost again by 1970. Small shops flourished in two chains of shops in the middle of the area on land provided by the contractors. The building contractors also donated land for various churches, including the parish of St. Pius X , which celebrated the first mass on June 22, 1955. The John Fluke Corporation moved its electronics center from Seattle to Mountlake Terrace in 1959. In 1961, the issue of bonds was approved in a specially scheduled election; the money was used to build a town hall.

Slowdown in development

The city was first seen as a car traffic-based dormitory city , but the successors saw it more as an “independent” development with an economically vital inner city area. This endeavor was fueled by the arrival of Fluke and the construction of the two chain stores as well as the town hall. However, this development stopped in the 1980s. Boeing suffered a massive collapse in business in the course of which approximately 75% of the workers at the Everett factory lost their jobs; the Alderwood Mall was in Lynnwood opened, which withdrew much purchasing power of the city; and in 1990 two arson attacks in the city center resulted in significant demolition, with the West Plaza not being able to open for 20 months and the East Plaza eventually being demolished and giving way to a gymnastics center. Fluke relocated to Everett in 1981. The 1980 census showed that Mountlake Terrace had lost five percent of its population within 10 years. The city budget was cut massively; however, Mountlake Terrace entered 1989 with a deficit of $ 1.3 million.
