Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (alternate title: Mr. and Mrs. Bridge ) is an American - British film drama from 1990 . Directed by James Ivory , the screenplay was written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala based on the novels Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connell .

action

The action takes place in Kansas City in the 1930s and 1940s. Attorney Walter Bridge's children - Carolyn, Douglas and Ruth - reject his and his wife India's conservative values. One day Walter ignores the warning of a tornado , so his wife stays with him while the other people seek protection. A little later it is criticized that India follows her husband unconditionally.

Ruth travels to New York City to pursue an acting career. She works there as a temporary worker in an editorial office and as a waitress. Carolyn marries a man who tells her father that he and Carolyn don't need permission to marry. Douglas is studying, but he wants to volunteer for the Air Force. Meanwhile, Carolyn is abused by her husband Gil Davis and returns to live with her parents. Ruth moves in with a man. She later travels to Paris , where she engages in short-lived affairs with artists. Grace Barron, a friend of India's, commits suicide.

The lexicon of international films described the film as a “psychological study of a creeping conflict in an idyllic middle class that cannot be shaken by anything”. He was "developed without dramatic highlights and despite the brilliant acting performances of the main actors tiring". Cinema magazine found the film showed "a family on the dissection table." Joanne Woodward was certified as having a "brilliant" performance.

Awards

Joanne Woodward was in 1991 in the category Best Actress for the Oscar and in the category Best Actress - Drama for the Golden Globe Award nomination. She was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1991 and won the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award . She and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala received the New York Film Critics Circle Award in 1990 .
