Origins Award : Best Card Game 2001 a. a. |
Munchkin is a satirical card game by Steve Jackson , whose specially designed card sheet was illustrated (for the most part) by John Kovalic . The game parodies the subcultural scene of the fantasy - role-playing game , which is already in the name Munchkin is expressed: The word (which in German as much as "Tot" or "runt" means) is used in role-player circles to (in a derogatory manner) to describe a player who tries above all to upgrade his character as aggressively as possible without going into the narrative or immersive properties of the role-playing game as a simulation (see also: Powergamer ). Munchkin has been published in English by Steve Jackson Games since 2001 , the German edition has been published by Pegasus Spiele since 2003 . The game enjoys cult status in gaming circles and has since experienced a number of independent and non-independent expansions that cover various genres of popular culture (fantasy, western , vampire / horror film , agent thriller , pirate film , Cthulhu myth , martial arts , science fiction , Superheroes - parody comics etc. (see extensions ). Munchkin is currently (August 2012) available in 15 different languages. The card game also resulted in a board game and a pen & paper role-playing game . In addition, the manufacturer relies on a relatively extensive range of merchandising and collectibles in order to bind customers and fans to the game.
Emergence
The card game is based on the also humorous book The Munchkin's Guide to Powergaming from 1999, which was illustrated by John Kovalic and published by Steve Jackson. The book is still available on the market.
Basics of the game
- Game material
The basic game contains 168 playing cards, a six-sided game die and instructions. You also need tokens, a character sheet, a level counter contained in some expansions or alternative basic game boxes, or special ten-sided dice for each player to indicate their current level.
- Playtime
A game of Munchkin can, depending on the number of players (usually three to six), the expansions used, the luck in drawing the cards (which plays an essential role), and the fact that the game is sprawling discussions , cheating and alternating alliances between players - sometimes expressly - supported, take between 30 minutes and 3 hours.
- Basic idea of the game
The gameplay simulates the descent into a dungeon ( dungeon ), in which players open doors behind which to hide often vicious monsters that must be fought. If the player remains victorious, he usually gets a level increase and can pick up treasure cards that improve his stats - with additional weapons, armor or equipment - and allow him to fight more powerful monsters in the following rounds
- Game objective
Each Munchkin player starts the game as a human adventurer with no equipment on the first level (i.e. no cards in front of him). Players will now try to improve as the game progresses, eventually reaching level 10 and winning the game. Players can level up by killing monsters , selling their own equipment (such as weapons or armor ) or playing special "go up a level" cards (also called SESAs). At the end of the game through the seventh seal (from Munchkin Apocalypse), whoever is strongest wins. However, only the equipment and other bonuses count, the level is not taken into account in the evaluation, the game also ends when all players become crazy cultists (from Munchkin Cthulhu), then the player with the highest level wins.
Detailed gameplay
preparation
The playing cards are divided into treasure and door cards (in expansions also dungeon, seal, etc. cards), which are laid out as separate stacks at the beginning of the game. At the beginning of the game each player receives four treasure and four door cards face down in their hand. In addition, as mentioned, a counting mechanism is required for each player to keep track of the respective level. Each player starts at the first level and, depending on whether it is a player, with male or female gender (the gender can change during the game). If there are races or classes (see below) under these starting cards, they can be laid out directly by the players, as can objects. Then the game is divided into four phases.
Phases
- Phase 1 ( kick in the door )
The players take turns and each reveal a door card that represents the encounter with monsters, malicious curses or other events. If a monster is revealed, a fight ensues (see below): In this case, phases 2 and 3 are skipped.
- Phases 2 ( looking for trouble ) and 3 ( looting the room )
If there is no battle, the player can either fight a monster from his hand (phase 2: Looking for trouble ) or draw another door card (phase 3: loot the room ) and take it into hand before the next player is your turn.
- Phase 4 ( Mild Gift )
If a player's turn has more than five cards in hand, he must give the player with the lowest level as many cards until he only has five cards in hand. If he himself has the lowest level, he must discard the excess cards.
struggle
In combat, the levels (including any bonuses that result from the weapons on display or the explanations on the monster, race or class cards) of monsters and players are compared against each other, whereby the player must exceed the value of the monster in order to defeat it. If the player succeeds in killing the monster, he usually rises one or two levels and receives one or more treasure cards, which he takes in hand. If the player loses, he can try to escape (see below), otherwise bad things can happen to him, for example the loss of certain items or levels.
- To ask for help
An important part of the game is the possibility to fight cooperatively at the side of a fellow player, for which the helping player usually receives part of the loot. The levels and bonuses of the helping player are added to the levels and bonuses of the fighting player. However, other players are asked to intervene in the fight with their own cards, for example to support a monster in combat or to stab the fighting players in the back with their own abilities.
- Escape
If a hero is defeated in combat, a die roll decides whether the escape succeeds or bad things happen to the player (see above). (There is usually a third chance of successfully escaping.)
- death
If a player dies fighting a particularly powerful monster, he keeps his class (es), race (es) and level. Any curses on display also have an effect on the player. However, the player loses all cards and cards in hand. Starting with the player with the highest level, the other players are allowed to loot the corpse and take one card each from the killed character.
Playing
When one or more players reach level 10, the game ends. The last level can only be achieved by killing a monster or using the Divine Intervention card . From Munchkin Apocalypse onwards , the game can also be ended by opening the seventh seal (newly introduced card type).
Card types
Door cards
- Races and classes
The basic game also includes races (such as elves , dwarves or halflings ) and classes (such as wizard , warrior or thief) that the player can adopt and that give him special properties. Races and classes can also be changed in the course of the game and even combined with the help of special cards. With the expansions to the basic game, loyalties (in Munchkin Impossible ) and accents (in Munchkin Buccaneers ) are added, which work in a similar way to races and classes.
- curses
If a curse is revealed in phase 1 , it hits the player whose turn it is. If, on the other hand, a curse is taken into hand at another point in the game, the player may turn it against another player at any time.
Treasure maps
Treasure maps show, as mentioned, weapons, armor or pieces of equipment that give the player a permanent combat bonus or other abilities and are placed face up in front of the player. Other treasure cards can only be played once and are kept in hand. As mentioned above, treasure maps can also be sold to level up. In addition, there are large and small items: of the large items , only one item can be worn per player. Barter with the other players is also possible.
seal
Currently only included in Munchkin Apocalypse , this card type allows the game to end without reaching level 10. A seal is opened (revealed) or closed (discarded) at the instruction of a game card, and then has various effects on the course of the game (e.g. Reinforcement of the monsters against a class). However, it can also have consequences for the player who opened the seal. For each open seal, the monsters get one level stronger; if seven seals are open the game ends. Since a seal is opened when a player dies, the playing time is often shortened.
Design of the cards
The cards are designed with small drawings and humorous titles, so the German-language basic game contains, for example, cards with titles such as "Ass kicking boots" (an item of equipment), "Called on obscure rules", "Cool cloth for tough guys", "Electric radioactive acid drink" , "Duck of Terror", "Cheese Grater of Peace", " Chainsaw of bloody dismemberment", "Potion of bad breath " and the like. In the English version, the game works a lot with verbal and verbal wit, which was not possible in the same way in the translation into German in some places. For this, the German version contains its own cards, which are not included in the English version, and which use German puns (e.g. "Wicht at the end of the tunnel").
Product lines
After Munchkin was a surprising success, Steve Jackson designed and published further product lines and corresponding extensions. A number appeared to play cards independent and non-independent extensions that different genres of popular culture ( Western , vampire - / horror film , spy thriller , pirate movie , Cthulhu Mythos , martial arts , science fiction , superheroes - Comics and Others..) Parody The cards of all Lines and extensions can, however, be combined in one game; Extensions such as Munchkin in the mixer (see below) are specially designed to facilitate interaction. In the meantime (August 2012) there are around 4000 different Munchkin cards (with a total weight of around 5.6 kg) that can theoretically be used together in the same game. In 2008, an independent board game called Munchkin Quest was finally decoupled, which is based on the original card game, and various expansions were released for this. In 2003 and 2004, a series of books were also published which Munchkin translated back into the classic pen-and-paper role-playing game from which it was created, and which are based on the d20 system .
Munchkin card games
Not all Munchkin card games have (so far) been published in German translation, some have also been changed and / or adapted for the German language editions ( e.g. Munchkin Cthulhu); Changes that were partially carried back into the English language game. Individual cards or entire boosters that were issued for promotion / marketing purposes or were supplements to merchandising articles also appeared irregularly , and not all of them are listed here.
Since 2016, many games with corresponding extensions have been re-released as double boxes.
There are also various Guest Artist Editions in which the games are reissued with modified illustrations by guest artists.

Munchkin Mighty Monsters is a card game with Munchkin illustrations, which is based on the UNO card game principle. One card is played from the hand card pool according to the number or color printed on it. If this does not succeed three times during a game round, the corresponding player loses and the remaining players win.
Munchkin board games
Munchkin Quest is a board game based on the card games. It was released in 2008 and gotvarious expansionswith Munchkin Quest 2: Looking for Trouble , Munchkin Quest: Portal Kombat and Munchkin Quest: Extra Parts . In 2017 a new version of the basic set was published, adapted to Alice in Wonderland.
Munchkin role-playing games
In 2003 and 2004 a series of books was published that translated the card game back into a classic pen-and-paper role-playing game (based on the d20 system ). These included the Player's Guide , the Master's Guide and Master's Screen as well as the Monster Guide and the Monster Guide 2.5 and the Star Munchkin Roleplaying Game .
Munchkin Comics
From 2015, the German comic publisher Panini will publish anthologies with comics from the Munchkin universe. In the English-speaking world, 25 individual issues have already been published (as of December 2018).
Munchkin trading card game
Since autumn 2018, a trading card game for two players has been published in English-speaking countries under the name "Munchkin Collectible Card Game", which is not compatible with the original Munchkin card game and has its own rules.
Further products
Merchandising and accessories
In addition to the product lines mentioned, Steve Jackson Games published a number of merchandising articles and accessories that can also bring benefits (additional bonuses) to a player while playing the game. These include T-shirts , special dice , step counter, plastic figurines, boxes for storing the cards, so-called Kill-O-Meter (with those calculated in the game Fight values and can be displayed clearly), bookmarks , posters , and even stuffed animals . Special merchandising items also appeared for the board game. The use of these articles in official Munchkin tournaments is partially restricted.
Collector box and collector's case
In 2006, Pegasus Spiele released a stable Munchkin collector's box to hold all the basic games and expansions of the card game that were published, which soon became too small for the rapidly growing product range. In 2012, Pegasus Spiele released a larger collector's case that had been announced several years earlier, but due to its poor workmanship, it caused mostly negative feedback from collectors. In 2017, a new stable Munchkin collector's box for up to 2000 cards was released in three different designs.
Tournaments
Since 2003, find German-speaking Munchkin - Championships (since 2005 under the name Munchkin Crusade ) instead. Special tournament rules apply to these tournaments, for example introducing an additional game phase (listening at the door ) or restricting the use of bonus items.

Individual evidence
- ↑ For example here
- ↑ So the English "Horny Helmet" is translated as "Geiler Helm", whereby the ambiguity of "horny" (horny ↔ horned) and on the other hand "helmet" (helmet ↔ acorn ), so "horny beating" or "horned helmet", get lost. Further examples are the “Maul Rat” - “Hammer-Rat”, an allusion to mall rats (young people loitering in shopping centers) or the “Arm-y Helmet”, which is both an “army helmet” and a “helmet with an arm” “Can be translated; newer versions translate “Arm-ee Helm” here.
