Mustafa Gedik (born June 8, 1953 in Ataköy , Trabzon (province) , † March 15, 1995 in Samsun ) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. He was one of the most important and consistent members of the Trabzonspor team that was the first Anatolian team to win the Turkish championship and was part of the club's great team for six seasons, which, nicknamed Karadeniz Fırtınası , dominated Turkish football for a decade from 1975 onwards .

Since Gedik was used at Trabzonspor in a wide variety of positions such as defense, midfield and forward, he was nicknamed the Joker .

Player career

society

Gedik came in the village Ataköy district Çaykara the province of Trabzon on the world. While the beginnings of his footballing career are unknown, he first caught on during his time with third division club Sebat Gençlik . From this club he moved in the summer of 1978 to Trabzonspor , the best-known and most successful club in the Trabzon province.

This club had been founded seven years earlier through the merger of several local clubs and had the intention of representing the province of Trabzon in the 1st Lig with local talent. The first season in the top Turkish league ended Trabzonspor's team in ninth place in the table and also reached the Turkish Cup final for the first time in the club's history . In the second first division season, the club surprisingly won the Turkish championship. Up to this season, the three big Istanbul clubs Beşiktaş Istanbul , Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul decided the championship of the 1st Lig among themselves. The team also won the President's Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup this season . In the 1976/77 season , the club succeeded in defending the title in the Turkish championship and the first title in the Turkish Cup. With this, the club achieved the first Turkish double victory in club history. After these very successful two seasons, the club awarded the championship in the 1977/78 season with a point difference to Fenerbahçe, but was able to get the other two cups. The club got into great financial difficulties and saw the solution in selling some stars. In addition, they wanted to bring about a change in the team squad. To this end, the stars sold were replaced by young talents, including Gedik. Favored by the departure of some top performers, Gedik captured a regular place in his first season at Trabzonspor. At the end of the 1978/79 season , his team again won the Turkish Championship and the President's Cup , an earlier version of the later Turkish Supercup . Gedik played 30 competitive games this season and was one of the players with the most competitive appearances in his club. While Gedik had always worked as a striker in his career so far, he was used at Trabzonspor in a wide variety of positions such as defense, midfield and attack as required. Therefore, he was nicknamed the Joker early on because of his ability to be used in different positions .

In the next season, the 1979/80 season , he succeeded with his club to defend the title in the Turkish championship and in the President's Cup. Gedik was one of the most frequently used players in his club this season with 36 competitive games. In the following season, Gedik's team managed to defend their title in the Turkish championship. As a result, Trabzonspor succeeded as the second club after Galatasaray Istanbul to win the Turkish championship three times in a row. After these successful three seasons Trabzonspor awarded the championship with one point to Beşiktaş and remained without a title for the first time in a long time. With the 1982/1983 season Gedik gradually lost his regular place in the team and completed 13 league games with two goals. His team narrowly missed the Turkish championship again this season, but managed to win the President's Cup. After these less successful seasons, the club invested in new players in the summer of 1983 and brought on aspiring young players such as Hasan Şengün , Hasan Vezir and Kemal Serdar . With these reinforcements, Trabzonspor got off to a good start in the 1983/84 season and fought head-to-head for the Turkish championship with Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul. Before the 26th matchday, Trabzonspor took first place in the table with just one point ahead of the two opponents. Already in the Saturday game of this match day Galatasaray lost 3-0 to Orduspor and thus enabled Trabzonspor to achieve a first preliminary decision towards the championship by an away win against the other direct rivals Fenerbahçe. In the hard-fought game, which was sold out with 26,000 spectators, both teams played a thrilling game. Trabzonspor won the game 1-0 with a goal from Hasan Şengün in the 89th minute. With this victory, the club took an important step towards the championship. The remaining game days the team confidently kept the point lead and reached the sixth and, for the time being, last championship in the club's history. Gedik only played one league and one cup game this season. With Trabzonspor, Gedik also won the Turkish Football Cup this season and was involved in Trabzonspor's second and last Turkish double victory. After this season he ended his career in the summer of 1984.

National team

Gedik was nominated for the first time for the squad of the Turkish national team in September 1981 by national coach Fethi Demircan as part of a qualifying game for the 1982 World Cup against the national team of the USSR and made his international debut in this match. The game took place in Moscow and was lost 4-0. Then it was no longer considered.

Coaching career

Gedik began his coaching career in 1989 at Trabzonspor as a junior coach .

From March 1993 he started as assistant coach of Şenol Güneş , his former team captain from his playing days, and assisted him until the summer of 1994.
