Production and development

Welcome to Life was filmed at University High School in Los Angeles. This provided the backdrop for the fictional Liberty High School. The shooting took place during the school year, so that students, teachers and classes had to move to other rooms that were not needed for the shoot. 7th Heaven , Joan of Arcadia and Arrested Development were shot on the same location . Welcome to Life was canceled after the first season due to poor ratings. The cancellation led to a fan campaign to save the series. Under the name Operation Life Support , fans wrote numerous letters to television stations and producers, asking for a second season. However, this was never shot.

Casting

First, Alicia Silverstone would play the lead role of Angela Chase. Since not all producers were satisfied with the selection, another casting was carried out. Claire Danes introduced herself and the producers chose Claire Danes. The casting director Linda Lowy later stated: "From the minute she walked in the room, Claire was chilling, astounding, and silent. There was so much power coming out of her without her doing much." (German: From the minute Claire walked into the room, she was weird, breathtaking and silent. She radiated so much power without having to do much for it.) Because Claire Danes, with her only 13 years, had fewer hours was able to work on set when the then 16-year-old Alicia Silverstone, the producers decided to include the story of Angela's parents even more in the series. Even AJ Langer turned out for the role of Angela Chase before, but was cast as Rayanne Graff. Jared Leto was originally only supposed to appear in the pilot as Jordan Catalano. However, the producers found him so good that they signed him for further episodes.
