NGC 6970 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Indians in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 216 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with PGC 129695 and is a member of the thirteen galaxies of the NGC 7038 group ( LGG 441 ).
The object was discovered by John Herschel on October 2, 1834 .
