NGC 6986 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation of Capricorn on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 386 million light years from the Milky Way and about 115,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxies IC 1336 and IC 1339 are located in the same area of the sky .
The Type Ia supernova SN 2002el was observed here.
The object was discovered on September 2, 1885 by the astronomer Francis Preserved Leavenworth .
