Frankenthal is located on the Mainz – Ludwigshafen railway line and is served by half-hourly S-Bahn ( Mainz - Worms - Mannheim (- Bensheim )) and the two-hour regional express trains between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe and, since December 2014, a regional express line that runs every two hours Frankfurt and Mannheim served, which means there is an hourly connection in fast regional traffic on the section between Ludwigshafen am Rhein and Frankfurt. Frankenthal is also on the branch line to Grünstadt , on which an hourly regional train runs.

history

Until the 1930s, the Ludwigshafen local railway , popularly known as Bembel , ran on the meter-gauge lines Ludwigshafen – Frankenthal and Frankenthal – Großkarlbach . When it was commissioned in 1890/91, an extension to Grünstadt was even considered. Soon, however, the faster, electric Ludwigshafen tram prevailed, the expansion of which in 1927 to Oppau took more and more passengers away from the slow, steam-powered local train, so that it had to be gradually discontinued in the 1930s. Up to the present day an extension of the tram over the final stop Oppau beyond Edigheim and the Pfingstweide to Frankenthal has been called for, there were already preliminary plans, but they never came to be implemented. In 2018, Rhein-Necker-Verkehr GmbH and the city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein are again in planning to integrate LU-Edigheim and LU-Pfingstweide as well as the city of Frankenthal into the tram network. However, Ludwigshafen is not particularly optimistic about fully integrating the neighboring city into its own network.

As part of the expansion of the RheinNeckar S-Bahn network , a second stop called “Frankenthal Süd” was built in the south of the city in addition to the main train station. It is located between the Carl-Bosch-Siedlung and the industrial area south and thus in the vicinity of several schools. It is designed as a bike-and-ride station. Construction work for the new stop began in May 2014. The stop was put into operation when the timetable changed on June 14, 2015 at 00:00.
