The National League , along with the American League , is one of the two leagues that make up Major League Baseball . Founded in 1876, fifteen teams in three divisions currently compete for the championship title, which is awarded annually. The current champion has played the world championship title since 1903 in the World Series against the winner of the American League (AL).

History and teams

The National League is older than the American League, which only started in 1901; it was founded in New York on February 2, 1876 . The league's founding members were teams from Chicago , St. Louis , Cincinnati , Louisville , New York , Philadelphia , Boston, and Hartford .

The number of teams has changed several times, when in 1899 a reduction from twelve to eight teams took place, this gave the decisive impetus for the establishment of the competing American League. All teams approved at that time are still members today:

are still in the same place. Experienced a move to the West

Various expansions led to the establishment of eight new expansion teams , in chronological order:

Championships

1876 to 1968

From the foundation up to 1968 the title was determined in the league procedure; the team with the highest odds (number of wins divided by number of games) won the title. This procedure was chosen because in view of the frequent abandonment or cancellation of matches in the past (e.g. due to darkness or bad weather), the teams rarely played exactly the same number of times. With the same win rate ( percentage , traditionally expressed with three digits after the US decimal point), a best-of-three series decided four times (1946, 1951, 1959 and 1962).

1969 until today

From 1969 the championship is held in so-called divisions. The East and West divisions, chosen according to geographical criteria, each determined a division winner until 1993, which then played off the champions of the NL in the Championship Series .

Since 1994 the game has been in three divisions (East, Central and West). The three division winners and the best second (so-called wild card) then determine the title holder via a semi-final ( Division Series ) and final ( Championship Series ). See the World Series for the respective results .

National League venues. Divisions: Red pog.svgWest, Blue pog.svgCentral, Green pog.svgEast.

The National League has been divided into three divisions (geographically East, Central and West) since 1994. The last change of assignment so far was necessary in 1998 when two teams were added to the MLB. The Arizona Diamondbacks came to the NL West, at the same time the Milwaukee Brewers moved from the American League to the NL Central to make room for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the AL . The relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington (now the Nationals) was completed before the 2005 season and the Houston Astros relocated to the AL West for the 2013 season.

The following overviews show the teams' positions since 1998.

regulate

The National League does not allow a designated hitter to this day, so the pitchers (throwers) still have to hit the pitch.
