The Grötzingen Nature Theater is an open-air theater in the Grötzingen district of the Baden-Württemberg city of Aichtal . The stage, which was built on the so-called Galgenberg in 1954 , is now mainly used for amateur theater productions and offers covered space for 885 spectators.

history

The natural theater was built in 1954 for a performance of the home play Die Grötzinger Kanonen, written by the then parish priest Hans Mistele, on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the then still independent city of Grötzingen. From now on, folk plays were performed every two to five years by theater-loving citizens of Grötzingen . In 1970, the Kulturgemeinschaft Naturtheater Grötzingen e. V. founded. From then on, the open-air stage was played annually, from 1972 even with two different productions: As one of the first open-air theaters in Baden-Württemberg, the people of Grötzingen included their own children's play in the program.

In 1978 they made themselves somewhat independent of the rigors of the weather by creating a roof for the spectator stands: From now on, 850 people found a seat protected from the rain.

From 1983 to 2002 the Naturtheater was closely involved in the Theatertage in Aichtal organized in those years . Close relationships exist with a theater group in the Hungarian town of Sümeg , the twin town of Aichtal.

In spring 2017 the auditorium was completely renewed and the wooden benches were replaced by comfortable individual seats.

architecture

The Grötzingen Nature Theater from a bird's eye view

A special feature of the Grötzingen Nature Theater is the wide-span concrete cover of the auditorium. With a concrete shell weight of 220 tons, it covers an area of 650 m² with spans of 42 and 27 meters. The shape of the bowl, which is open to nature on all sides, makes it easier for the actors to understand speech and is designed in such a way that no dripping noises can be heard when it rains. The architect of the auditorium was Michael Balz, the structural engineer was the shell expert Heinz Isler , and the client was the Kulturgemeinschaft Naturtheater Grötzingen e. V.

Previous productions

After only the plays of the Grötzingen parish priest Hans Mistele had been played in the early years, the nature theater was also opened to other authors from 1963. The author's name that appears most frequently on the program is (especially in the 1970s) Paul Wanner , whose pieces were performed a total of twelve times in Grötzingen.
