The navigation stars are particularly bright stars used in navigation .

The most common list of navigational stars is since the year 1802 in the navigation manual American Practical Navigator by Nathaniel Bowditch published. In addition, navigation stars are listed in most nautical almanacs and astronomical yearbooks .

The stars are numbered from west to east according to convention; i.e., with decreasing star angle . The number of navigation stars varies between approx. 50 and 200 in the different manuals.
