Nelson Slade Bond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nelson Slade Bond (born November 23, 1908 in Scranton , Pennsylvania , † November 4, 2006 in Roanoke , Virginia ) was an American writer who, in addition to independent non- fiction and fiction works, contributed widely to magazines, the radio, the Television and theater created. He was a pioneer of early science fiction and fantasy . His fiction work mainly includes short stories , most of which appeared in pulp magazines in the 1930s and 1940s . He achieved notoriety through the series of his Lancelot Biggs stories as well as his Meg the Priestess series, with which he introduced one of the first strong female heroines into science fiction.

Life and written work

Bond's parents were from Nova Scotia , but moved to Scranton , Pennsylvania shortly before he was born, and settled in Philadelphia after the First World War . Bond discussed plays for the Philadelphia Inquirer in his high school days . From 1932 to 1934 he attended Marshall College in Huntington ( West Virginia ). During this time he was writing for the Huntington Herald Advertiser and college newspaper , The Parthenon , and met Betty Gough Folsom, whom he married in 1934.

He worked briefly as a PR agent for Nova Scotia and began his writing career in 1935 with articles on factual subjects for various magazines. His first science fiction work was Down the Dimensions , which appeared in the April 1937 issue of Astounding .

Bond wrote over 250 short stories . In the 1930s and 1940s they appeared u. a. in magazines like Amazing Stories , Fantastic Adventures or Weird Tales . Bond's most famous characters include Pat Pending , Lancelot Biggs, and Hank Horse-Sense . In Germany, the Biggs adventures ( Lancelot Biggs space travel ) and Mr. Mergenthwirer's Lobblies as well as the collection Island of Conquerors by Heyne appeared .

Bond almost completely gave up poetry in the 1950s. He worked more and more for radio and television and in 1959 opened a PR company in Roanoke (Virginia) , later a major second-hand bookshop.

At the encouragement of supporters and professional colleagues, namely Harlan Ellison , he only brought out another fiction work in 1995.

Bond was in extensive correspondence with James Branch Cabell and was the administrator of his literary estate for a while after his death.

Bond donated his records to the Marshall University Library in Huntington in 2002 . The library has built a replica of Bond's home study.

Nelson and Betty Bond had two sons. Betty Bond made a career in Virginia television. She interviewed key people in the area for her Betty Bond show for WSLS-TV in Roanoke.

Radio and television

Bond wrote for radio series such as Dr. Christian , Hot Copy (1941–44) and The Sheriff (1944–51, a continuation of Death Valley Days ) and u. a. for the television anthology series Lux Video Theater , Studio One , General Motors Theater and Tales of Tomorrow . Mr. Mergenthwirer's Lobblies saw over half a dozen adaptations for the radio and ran as a radio series in 1938. This work has been after processing by bonding the first via a network broadcast television play full length.

Bond described his experience with radio and television in Locus magazine in 1998 :

“I started writing for the radio after they processed a few of my stories. I thought: “My God, I can do better!” And started to adapt it for the radio myself. One day they started two series and they asked me if I wanted to write them. I wrote 52 weeks of hot copy - and around 26 weeks of The Sheriff Show (a western comedy). Then came the television. I had just drafted Mr. Mergenthwohler's lobbies as a radio series and was editing it for television. It became the first television game ever to be broadcast over a network. The network consisted of Boston, New York and Washington. (That was in 1946.) The presentation was quite complex, there was an audience in the studio, and they printed a program for it. Unfortunately there is no recording of the show - back then there was no tape for it. (...) At that time I probably missed the chance of my life in terrible thoughtlessness. When the game was finished the director said, “This is a brand new medium. Why don't you come up here to commit yourself to this matter with us? ”They couldn't pay me very much, and I said,“ I make more money on the radio now than that, ”so I refused. But I've written about fifteen or twenty television plays, some of them adaptations of my own work, some of them my own creations. State of Mind was a work of fantasy about a man pissed off by modern civilization. He said: "I'm falling away from the Union now." And he did. I thought this was a damn good idea! (Still a nice game, but out of production.) I edited my second Mergenthwirer / Lobblies story as a television game, and then there was a third. "
