Nicolaas Scholtz (born February 5, 1991 in Caledon ) is a South African tennis player .

Career

Junior career and college tennis

Nicolaas Scholtz, whose father Calla Scholtz was a professional rugby player, was extremely successful as a junior. In 2008 he took part in the Orange Bowl , one of the world's most important junior tennis tournaments. A year later he played both singles and doubles in all four Grand Slam tournaments , the Australian Open , the French Open , the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open . His best placement was a combined 22nd place in January 2009.

Scholtz studied at the University of Mississippi , where he played college tennis for the Rebels . He participated in the NCAA Division I Tennis Championships and reached the quarterfinals in 2012 . In the following year he reached the semi-finals with Jonas Lütjen in doubles. He was SEC Freshman of the Year in 2012 and SEC Player of the Year in 2014 .

Professional tour

On the professional tour, Scholtz mainly plays tournaments of the third and second class ITF Future Tour and ATP Challenger Tour . So far, he has won 13 singles and 11 doubles on the Future Tour. In 2009 he got a wildcard to qualify for the tournament in Johannesburg , but was eliminated in the qualifying round. A year later he made his first appearance on the ATP World Tour . While he failed to qualify again in the individual , he and his partner Ruan Roelofse also received a wildcard for the double field . They clearly lost their opening match against Prakash Amritraj and James Cerretani in straight sets. In 2011 he qualified for the individual field in Johannesburg, but lost to Denis Gremelmayr in the first round . In the following years he played exclusively on the Future and Challenger Tour, where he won various titles on the Future Tour.

In Lexington he reached his first final on the Challenger Tour with Tucker Vorster in July 2016 , but had to admit defeat to the Australians Luke Saville and Jordan Thompson . He was finally more successful a month later. In Aptos he was again in the final with Vorster, this time defeating the pairing Mackenzie McDonald and Ben McLachlan in three sets and celebrating his first success at Challenger level. In 2017 he tried to qualify for the tournament in Winston-Salem , but lost his first round match against Márton Fucsovics significantly. His best single place is a 320th place, in doubles he achieved a 251st place.

Scholtz made his debut in 2012 for the South African Davis Cup team in the play-off game against Canada. He lost both his first individual against Milos Raonic and the final insignificant fifth game against Frank Dancevic . He has a single balance of 5: 7 and a double balance of 0: 1.
