Nikolai Nikolaevich Sawaruchin ( Russian Николай Николаевич Заварухин * 18th March 1975 in Ufa , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach, who in his active between 1992 and 2009 included for Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the Russian Super League and played HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Continental Hockey League . He has been the head coach of HK Sibir Novosibirsk since April 2019 .

Career

Nikolai Sawaruchin began his career as an ice hockey player at Salawat Yulayev Ufa , for which he was active in the International Hockey League (MHL) from 1992 to 1994 . During this time he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1993 in the seventh round as a total of 169 players by the New Jersey Devils , for which he never played. The attacker then played for HK CSKA Moscow from 1994 to 1996 , before returning to Salawat Julajew Ufa for three more seasons. In 1997 he finished third in the MHL championship with Salawat.

From 1999 to 2001, the left shooter was on the ice for one season each for Ak Bars Kazan and HK Lada Tolyatti , and in 2000 he was Russian runner-up with Ak Bars. In 2002 he returned to Salawat Yulayev and was appointed captain. In the 2003/04 season he was the best player of his team with 30 points, just like in the following season with 31 points, although he was temporarily given over to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk at the end of the main round . With Salawat Yulayev Ufa he was in the 2007/08 season for the first time in his career Russian champions .

In the summer of 2008 Sawaruchin received a contract in the newly formed Continental Hockey League at Metallurg Magnitogorsk. There he ended his career following the 2008/09 season , in which Metallurg had finished third.

International

Sawaruchin represented Russia for the first time at the U18 Junior European Championship in 1993 and won the silver medal there with the U18 juniors. Then Sawaruchin took part in the Junior World Championships in 1994 and 1995 , where he won the bronze and silver medal, respectively.

As a trainer

After his career as an active player, Zavaruchin became a coach and initially looked after the junior team Batyr Neftekamsk from the Molodjoschnaja Chokkeinaja Liga B (MHL B), with which he finished second in the junior league in 2012 and second in 2013. Between 2013 and 2014 he was the head coach of the Sibirskije Snaipery from the highest Russian junior league MHL and reached the play-offs with the Siberian Snipers for the first time in their history. For the 2014/15 season he moved as an assistant coach to Toros Neftekamsk in the Wysschaja Hockey League . There he was released in January 2015 and returned to the Sibirskije Snaipery . Until December of the same year he was head coach there again, before he was offered the opportunity to become assistant coach at Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the KHL. He filled this position until October 2016, before he was fired again and became assistant coach at Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg . With Awtomobilist he won the KHL East Conference in the regular 2018/19 season and advanced in the play-offs to the conference semifinals.

He has been the head coach of the HK Sibir Novosibirsk since April 2019, making him the head coach of the KHL for the first time.
