North Bend is a small town ( city ) in Dodge County in the state of Nebraska in the United States . The city is located about 14 miles west-northwest of Fremont on the South Platte River and had a total of 1,177 inhabitants at the last census in 2010 .

history

The North Bend area was originally settled by the Pawnee Native Americans . On July 4, 1856, Scottish settlers who were on the South Platte River en route to Kansas stopped at the site of the present city to celebrate Independence Day. They founded a small settlement there, which was first named Emerson and later renamed Franklin . The settlement continued to grow with the influx of new settlers and a sawmill was built. In 1858 the village was renamed Wallace . The name of the place goes back to an entrepreneur who offered to build a library in a town if it bears his name in return.

In October 1867 the land was parceled out by landowner Matthew Cotterell. The Union Pacific Railroad bought a piece of land to expand the First Transcontinental Railroad . On August 12, 1869, the name of the village was changed to North Bend , this name was derived from the station established by the UP, this was the northernmost station of the railway company in the state of Nebraska. On April 20, 1876, North Bend was incorporated as a Village . At that time there were 21 shops, a school and a church in the village. In 1879, a local newspaper was introduced in North Bend. In the early years, North Bend experienced rapid population growth. In April 1886 the place was raised to the City.

During the 1960s, North Bend experienced another strong population growth until the city reached its highest population ever with 1,368 inhabitants in 1980. Since then, the population has been falling. In 2006 North Bend celebrated 150 years of existence.
