history

The place was created in 1854 with the construction of a station on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . The place was named after the wealthy Colonel John O'Fallon from St. Louis. On May 18, 1854, the first building lots were auctioned off. The next year a post office was built and German settlers were recruited to cultivate the surrounding farmland. On January 27, 1874, the place received the status of a village . As a result of a vote on March 14, 1905, O'Fallon became a city . The town's population grew steadily until 1930 when a decrease of 23 people was noted.

The town's growth has accelerated since the 1980s. With the construction of Interstate 64 , O'Fallon became a major residential and business suburb in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The film actor William Holden (1918–1981) came from O'Fallon .
