Obernhain is about 25 kilometers north of Frankfurt am Main and borders directly on the forest area of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe in the south .

history

The area around Obernhain has been inhabited by people since the early Stone Age . The oldest find is a pointed, slightly damaged stone ax from the Stone Age. A coin find in Obernhain, which is attributed to the Celtic tribe of Treveri , dates back to the Celtic period (around 100 BC) .

In Roman times the Limes ran over Obernhain area.

In the early Middle Ages was ore mining and forestry operation. The place was mentioned in 1370 as "Obernhane" and belonged to the Wehrheim court from the 15th to the 18th century.

The local recreational traffic increasingly played a role, at the latest since the 1920s this weekend and city excursion traffic increased.

Since the territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse on August 1, 1972, the municipality of Obernhain was incorporated into Wehrheim by state law.

The population is currently around 1700.

The Drusenküppel is a mound east of Obernhain, which is made up of a group of trees. These are the remains of a medieval tower castle , a so-called motte . The diameter of the castle was about 40 meters. The castle was surrounded by a three to four meter wide moat. Since there is no documentary mention of the castle, neither the foundation nor the beginning of its decline are known. Excavations by August von Cohausen (1871), Louis Jacobi (1895) and Heinrich Jacobi (1913) revealed that the castle had no stone walls. Only a few high mediaeval finds were recovered and exhibited in the Saalburg today.

Buildings

For the listed buildings see the list of cultural monuments in Obernhain .

  • The old church is a half-timbered building from the 18th century. It served the formerly independent community as a town hall and fire brigade base and of course as a prayer room . Today (after renovations in 1980 and 2002) it serves as a wedding room and multi-purpose building.
  • The present church was built at the end of the 1980s for 650,000 DM and was consecrated on April 9, 1989. At that time it replaced a wooden church that had been acquired and built second-hand in 1972.
  • A number of half-timbered houses in the center of the village have been renovated. During the renovation and restoration of Saalburgstrasse 9, the plaster was removed and the framework was exposed again. The work took about nine months and cost the same amount as the purchase price of the property. Then the property was placed under monument protection. It housed a goldsmith's shop, a theater school (with performances in the barn) and a Christmas market was held in the inner courtyard before Christmas. The development of Saalburg 9 - Hessenhof - into a small cultural center ended when the owner emigrated to the USA. A photo gallery of the former owner has been preserved from the renovation of the Hessenhof.

Hiking trails

Due to its scenic location between forests and fields, there are a large number of hiking trails around Obernhain , via which the excursion destinations Hessenpark , Saalburg and Lochmühle are easily accessible. Cyclists can go from Obernhain to Wehrheim, Neu-Anspach , Usingen , Bad Homburg vor der Höhe (via the former road to Saalburg) and Friedrichsdorf . All municipalities and cities are within seven kilometers without having to drive on main roads .

Sports

In and around Obernhain there is a wide range of cultural and sporting leisure activities. The tennis club offers a large hall with three indoor courts, seven outdoor courts and a football field with a diving pit. The Bad Homburg air sports club operates the Anspach airfield near Obernhain. About five kilometers from Obernhain, in Bad Homburg-Dornholzhausen, is the "New Course" of the Bad Homburg Golf Club.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the northern part of Obernhain, between the sports hall and the grounds of the tennis club , there is a villa area . There are also many expensive residential properties in the rest of the village . Numerous personalities from the economy and the media industry have found their place of residence in Obernhain. This fact makes Obernhain the preferred location in Wehrheim.

The purchasing power is a index of around 200 at the top of Hesse , so therefore at the level of Koenigstein im Taunus , Kronberg , Bad Homburg and Bad Soden am Taunus .

The train stations Wehrheim and Saalburg (an der Lochmühle ) - on the trains the latter is sometimes referred to as Saalburg / Lochmühle - are nearby (around 20 minutes' walk, almost two kilometers by bike ). From there, the Taunusbahn takes you to Bad Homburg in around 20 minutes and Frankfurt am Main in just under three quarters of an hour .
