history

The original construction

The refuge was built in 1881 by the former Prague section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV). After the Berliner Hütte from 1879, it was the second oldest alpine club hut in the Zillertal Alps. Originally as a one-room hut in the attic it had eight mattresses - and eight hay stores . There was an iron stove on the first floor, the flue gases of which were led outside through the gable wall via a stove pipe; the climbers had to bring firewood and food for self-sufficiency.

On April 1, 1900, it was sold together with the Rifflerhütte, which had been destroyed by an avalanche since 1945, for 11,000  marks to the Berlin section of the DuOeAV. It soon became apparent that the capacity of the Olpererhütte was no longer sufficient due to the increasing number of visitors. It was not until 1933, however, that a fundamental expansion was carried out with an extension on the mountain side, which contained a separate kitchen and additional overnight accommodation on the upper floor. Since then the hut has been managed.

The renovation in 1976

A recent renovation in 1976 brought more modern sanitary facilities and an additional dining room, but the conditions remained cramped, especially for the tenants of the now managed hut. The fully occupied hut almost escaped a catastrophe on the evening of July 31, 1998, when, due to a prolonged storm at high temperatures, an ice and debris avalanche released the Olpererhütte at the glacier gate of the Großer Riepenkees at an altitude of 2,800 meters above the hut but only grazed on one corner of the house. The long-time tenant of the Olpererhütte, Olga Platzer from Ginzling († 2014), known as the Olpererhexe , achieved a certain national fame through her originality in dealing with guests in the often overcrowded hut.

The new hut

At the end of the 1990s, the general meeting of the Berlin section of the DAV decided to sell the hut for financial reasons, because pending investments could no longer be made due to the official requirements regarding environmental protection, especially in the energy supply and wastewater treatment.

In 2004 it was possible to sell the Olpererhütte to the Neumarkt / Oberpfalz section, with the aim of a thorough renovation. But it soon became apparent that a completely new building would be more economical due to the critical building fabric from the various eras. So it was decided to completely demolish the old Olpererhütte and replace it with a new building. The demolition was finished on August 28, 2006. The redesign was carried out by the architectural office, graduate engineer Hermann Kaufmann , who developed a simple design: The narrow gable side of the new hut should point towards the valley to enable good integration into the environment . The topping-out ceremony was celebrated in summer 2007 and at the end of June 2008 the Neumarkt / Upper Palatinate section opened the new Olpererhütte, which has now been completed.
