biography

The Olsen twins are the daughters of David "Dave" Olsen (* 1953) and Jarnette "Jarnie" Fuller (* 1954). They have other siblings, James "Trent" and Elizabeth , and two half-siblings from their father's second marriage. The parents divorced in 1995.

films and series

The Olsen twins began their careers in 1987 at the age of nine months when their mother successfully introduced them to the casting for the television series Full House . Until 1995 they played, initially under the common name "Mary Kate Ashley Olsen", in the series alternately the character Michelle Elizabeth Tanner. Because of the US protection regulations for children, such a double occupation is not uncommon.

In 1992 the first children's film Kidnapping the Nervesäge followed, in which they first appeared together. Like the Full House series , it was very successful. Further children's films followed by the end of the 1990s, such as a modification of the double Lottchen in 1995 : one and one makes four .

In her first youth films , the focus was initially on humor. For example, in the 2000 film Top Secret - Two chatterboxes in Australia . Later youth films were more oriented towards the genre of love films , such as In Love in Rome 2002. Also in that year they shot So Little Time , a television series.

Companies

In 1991 the lawyers Robert Thorne and Greg Redlitz founded the Dual Star Entertainment Group to market the Olsen siblings.

The target group of the films and the products licensed to other manufacturers were primarily children at first and later adolescents, to whom the twins are presented in public and in their roles as normal children / teenagers of slightly different characters. Real or supposed private disputes and changes are also staged. The aim of this is for the Olsen siblings to create as broad a possibility of identification as possible for the target group.

From 2000 onwards, numerous merchandising products were offered worldwide under the brand name mary-kateandashley , including clothing, perfume, cosmetic products, fashion dolls, books, magazines, CDs, video games, posters and household items. In the US, most of the merchandise was sold through Wal-Mart . In Germany, products of the mary-kateandashley brand were offered at Wal-Mart and via Otto Versand . Sales in Germany ceased at the end of July 2005. In 2009 the Olsens gave up the mary-kateandashley brand after starting other projects in 2006.

In 2006 the twins launched the high-priced women's fashion brand The Row (named after London's Savile Row ). For the high-quality fashion collections from The Row (clothing as well as accessories such as handbags and sunglasses ), the Olsens have received awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) so far in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018 . In 2009 a short-lived men's collection was presented by The Row for the first time ; In 2016, the Olsens tried again in the field of men's fashion and finally launched a full men's fashion collection in the upper price segment of The Row in October 2018 . The Row has stores in Manhattan and Los Angeles. In 2007, the Olsens founded the Elizabeth and James fashion company for young women’s fashion in the upper mid-price segment, for which they have their own shop in Los Angeles. In 2009 the Olsenboye clothing line was launched with low-priced teenage clothing that was exclusively available through JC Penney . In July 2011 the twins started their StyleMint project , through which the twins initially sold their own t-shirts and finally accessories and jewelry. In the fall of 2011, the American shoe designer Steve Madden, who acquired the North American license for Superga shoes in the same year, appointed the Olsens as chief designers for this shoe brand. In 2013, the Olsens designed three affordable collections for the Norwegian fashion chain Bik Bok .

Since 2004, when they came of age, the Olsens have been presidents of the company Dual Star Entertainment Group (the partners Thorne and Redlitz were paid out in 2004), whose current annual turnover is estimated at almost two billion US dollars. The twins have published several books, including the Mary-Kate and Ashley Yearbook (2005), Mary-Kate and Ashley Style Secrets (2006), and Influence (2008).

Since the mid-2000s, the animal welfare organization PETA has been complaining about the use of fur in the Olsen collections and in their private wardrobe through numerous campaigns in which the twins are referred to as " Trollsens " or "Hairy Kate" and "Trashley Trollsen" .

The industry journal The Hollywood Reporter declared the twins to be the "Most Powerful Young Women in Hollywood". In 2011, according to Forbes Magazine , both were still among the top-earning young actors in Hollywood. Between June 2007 and June 2008 they received fees ranging from 15 to 22 million US dollars and ranked behind the British Daniel Radcliffe (19-25 million US dollars) and her compatriot Miley Cyrus (15-25 million US dollars) Dollars) in third place.
