As in the 5000 meter race , there was no clear favorite. In advance, there had been fears about the hot temperatures. But on race day it was raining and the thermometer only showed 20 ° Celsius.
In the initial phase, the Moroccan Rhadi Ben Abdesselam tried to break away. But the Soviet runner Yevgeny Zhukov, who ran for his compatriot Pyotr Bolotnikow, led the field again. Now there were changing guides until the Australian Dave Power accelerated the pace at about 7000 meters. Only Bolotnikow and his compatriot Alexei Dessjattschikow as well as the German Hans Grodotzki could go now. In the penultimate lap, Bolotnikow pushed again and gained a lead that grew bigger and bigger. He was Olympic champion with almost five seconds ahead of Grodotzki. Power won the sprint for the bronze medal ahead of Dessjattschikow.
Overall, it was a very fast race. The Olympic record was improved by seventeen seconds and there were record times for many of the runners involved in the race.
Hans Grodotzki won Germany's first medal in this discipline. For him personally it was the second medal at these games after the silver over 5000 meters.
