In the 1996 Olympic Games in the American US metropolis Atlanta a competition in place water polo instead.

The venue was the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

The five best teams at the World Cup in Atlanta from September 12 to 17, 1995 (Hungary, Italy, Russia, Spain, Croatia) were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament, with the USA as hosts. A qualification tournament in Berlin from February 10th to 18th, 1996 decided on the six other starting places. Yugoslavia, Greece, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Germany and Romania prevailed.

The four best teams from both preliminary round groups advanced to the quarter-finals. The fifth and sixth ranked teams fought a round for places 9 to 12.
