The men's individual high diving from the 10-meter platform at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing was held on August 22 and 23, 2008 at the Beijing National Aquatics Center . 30 athletes took part.

All individual water jump disciplines include three rounds. In the first, the 30 starters were each entitled to six qualifying jumps. The 18 best jumpers thus qualified for the semi-finals, the points from the qualification were then deleted. Six jumps were completed again in the semi-finals. With these, the 12 best jumpers qualified for the final, their semi-final points were also deleted again. In the final, too, there were six jumps. Seven judges rate each jump with a score between 0 and 10 (with gradations of 0.5 points each). The two highest and the two lowest ratings are ignored and the sum of the remaining three ratings is multiplied by a weighting factor that depends on the degree of difficulty of the jump presented (DD - degree of difficulty ). The overall rating of each round is the sum of the points for the six individual jumps of the respective round. The winner of the competition was the Australian Matthew Mitcham ( Australia ), after him Luxin Zhou (People's Republic of China) and Gleb Galperin (Russia) climbed the podium. AustraliaAustralia

Remarks:

  • The extraordinarily high total number of points of the 2004 Olympic champion, Hu Jia, results from an alternative evaluation method. Up to and including 2004, the competition was structured somewhat differently in terms of sequence and requirements than afterwards. In addition, the overall ranking in the semi-finals and finals up to this year consisted of the scores for the round itself and the previous round combined. Hu Jia achieved 6th place in the qualifying round (6 jumps) with 463.44 points. In the semi-finals (only 4 jumps!) He received a total of 207.30 points, which resulted in a total of 670.74 points and a placement in 4th place. In the final (again 6 jumps) he finally received 540.78 points (best score of the tournament), which were offset against the 207.30 semi-final points and brought him the gold medal with a total of 748.08.
  • Thomas Daley, who is only thirteen, qualified for participation in the Olympic Games through the European Championship title, although the minimum age for participation in the Olympic Games is otherwise 16 years. He received special permission to participate in the games. Despite his inexperience as the youngest Olympic participant, he made it to the final and finally to 8th place with 463.55 points. In the following year he won the World Championship in Rome (youngest world champion in history) with an outstanding score of 539.58, which would have been enough for Olympic gold in 2008.

final

August 23, 2008

Zhou Luxin led the ranking in the final up to the last jump. His sixth jump, however, brought him only 74.80 points after an unfortunate entry of water and shook Luxin's seemingly secure leadership position. The up to then runner-up Matthew Mitcham underpinned his triumphant advance with a particularly strong execution of a jump combination of two and a half somersaults and two and a half twists (rotation around his own axis) in pike position (with straight legs), a jump with a particularly high degree of difficulty (DD) of 3, 8th. The seven jurors awarded 9.0 | 9.5 | 9.5 | 10 | 10 | 10 | 10 points to Mitcham, with a total of 112.10 points (the two best and worst ratings are not included :) this was the best-rated jump in the history of the Olympic Games. Mitcham's total score of 537.95 was enough to knock Luxin out of first place. In doing so, he denied China the almost achieved goal of bringing home gold medals in all diving categories. Zhou Luxin finished the final round with 533.15 points and at least secured the silver medal. He was followed by Gleb Galperin with a total of 525.80 points.

background

The sixth and last jump of the Olympic champion in the final round was the highest-rated jump in competition history with 112.10 points. Mitcham was also the first Australian water diver since 1924 to secure an Olympic gold medal.

The only 13-year-old Englishman Tom Daley, as the reigning European champion, received a special permit to participate in the Olympic Games, although the minimum age for qualification is otherwise 16 years. At the time of the competition he was 14 years old. A year later, shortly after his 15th birthday in Rome, he became the youngest ever world diving champion (and the youngest ever medalist at a world championship). Despite lower DDs, his score in the 2009 World Championship final was 539.58 - so it was even higher than the final score of 537.95 points achieved by 2008 Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham and would therefore have brought him Olympic gold in 2008. At the following Olympic Games in London in 2012 , he was finally able to secure the bronze medal.

The American David Boudia (here in 10th place in the finals) won in this discipline at the subsequent games in London in 2012.
