Orana is an East Timorese place, Aldeia and Suco in the Turiscai administrative office ( Manufahi municipality ).

The place

The place Orana is located in the center of Sucos, at an altitude of 1182  m . Here is the primary school of sucos, the Escola primaria Orana .

753 inhabitants (2015) live in Orana, 365 men and 388 women. The population density is 49.2 inhabitants / km². There are 110 households in the Suco. Around 45% of the population name Mambai as their mother tongue. A little less than 40% speak Isní , around 12 % speak Tetum Prasa , minorities Makasae , Idaté , Kemak or Habun .

Before the 2015 regional reform, Orana had an area of ​​15.07 km². Now it is 15.30 km². The Suco is located in the south of the Turiscai administrative office. To the north and east is the Suco Foholau , northwest of the Suco Beremana and southwest of the Suco Mindelo . In the south, Orana borders on the administrative office of Fatuberlio with its sucos Fahinehan and Caicassa . In the east of Orana there is a lake, the Lagoa Laheborak , which flows into the eastern border river, the Ahangcain , a tributary of the southern Laclós . The western border flows along the Sui , a source river of the Caraulun .

There are no major roads connecting the Suco with the outside world. For the parliamentary elections in East Timor in 2007 , for example, the ballot boxes had to be brought to the polling station in the primary school by helicopter and then picked up again. The place Orana is the only larger settlement in the Suco.

In the Suco are the three Aldeias Fatulelo , Orana and Teberai .

history

In 1975 the Indonesians invaded East Timor. The resistance of FRETILIN and its military arm, the FALINTIL , formed in the mountains, including in Turiscai. In 1978 the Indonesians attacked Orana and other sucos in what is now the administrative office. Houses and granaries were burned down. The inhabitants fled south towards Alas and Fatuberlio . 90 died of hunger and disease. 150 of them were caught and brought back.

politics

In the 2004/2005 elections , João da Silva was elected Chefe de Suco. In the 2009 elections won Domingos Mendonça .
