Jürgen Osterhammel
Jürgen Osterhammel (born June 1, 1952 in Wipperfürth ) is a German historian ; Until his retirement he was Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Konstanz . He is considered one of the leading representatives of global history .
Life
Jürgen Osterhammel attended the high school in Hanau and after graduating from high school in 1970, studied history, political science and German studies as well as philosophy in Marburg . Since 1974 he has received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . From October 1976 to June 1978 he completed postgraduate studies at the Department of International History, London School of Economics and Political Science. In 1976 he passed the first and in 1981 the second state examination. In 1980 he worked with Richard Lorenz at the Kassel University with his work on British Imperialism in the Far East. Structures of penetration and local resistance to the Chinese market 1932-1937 doctorate .
1982 to 1986 Osterhammel worked as a research assistant at the German Historical Institute in London under the direction of Wolfgang J. Mommsen . 1986 to 1990 he worked as an academic advisor at the Department of Scientific Politics, Chair Wilhelm Hennis , at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1990 , Osterhammel completed his habilitation in Freiburg with the font China and World Society. From the 18th century to our time (first reviewer Ernst Schulin ). From 1990 to 1997 he was a professor for non-European history at the FernUniversität in Hagen , and in 1996/97 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . Osterhammel then taught until 1999 at the chair for the history of international relations at the Institut Universitaire des Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva . From 1999 to March 2018 he held the chair for modern and contemporary history at the University of Konstanz .
In his 2009 book The Metamorphosis of the World. A history of the 19th century Osterhammel presented a global history of the 19th century . The book was received very positively by experts and the general public.
