Otto - The New Film is a German comedy film from 1987. After Otto - The Film from 1985, it is the second full-length film by comedian Otto Waalkes .

The plot

Otto has arrived in the big city (not Hamburg as in the first film, but Berlin), but anything but happy. He had to sell almost all of his house, is in arrears with the rent and is very homesick for Hühneroog , his home island in the Frisian Wadden Sea . However, two people stand in the way of returning to the coast: the warm-hearted wallflower Anna Radich , who has kept an eye on him, and her bossy father, the caretaker of the tenement , who only lets Otto go when his debts have been settled.

From now on Otto has to do almost all the work in the house for Radich: Radish's dog Harras for a walk, lugging away old radiators , shoveling coal or removing garbage bags. At first he can successfully avoid the last three jobs by constantly moving the fence in the backyard. In his work he also made the acquaintance of the resident animal psychologist Edelsen , who asked him to take care of his house cat , which was the last of its kind , during his absence at a conference . The rare and valuable animal has only one problem: It is suicidal if Otto does not adhere to the given feeding schedule exactly, which poses considerable problems for him.

Otto nests in Edelsen's apartment and thus comes closer to the new tenant of his old apartment, Gaby Drösel . The attractive and arrogant beauty only has eyes for the action star Anvil , the Arnold Schwarzenegger cut of a successful, muscle - bound movie hero. Otto, who Gaby thinks is noble, plays this role in order to be able to be close to his beloved, but is extremely clumsy. He also tells Anna about Gaby. The dumped janitor's daughter then decides to bring Otto back down to earth by describing Otto's clean-up methods to her father and telling Gaby the truth.

The dropped Otto then tries to win Gaby back for himself, but fails again and again. Only a call from the film producer Schmieriak , who also thinks Otto is Edelsen, changes the situation. Lubriciak asks Otto to reassure his protégé Amboß , who came to Berlin for the premiere of his new film but freaked out. With the promise to bring her to the premiere of the new anvil film Amboss - der Rabiator (previous films: anvil - the illuminator and anvil - the controller ), Otto finally persuades Gaby to come along.

After a few quarrels, Otto and Gaby get to the movie theater. Here Otto confronts the action hero running amok with his infantility. As a result, Otto can calm down anvil , but he is now totally stupid because of the action and stumbles onto the stage jumping and yodelling (like Otto himself). The audience is totally horrified, the premiere failed, and Gaby, who had to witness the martyrdom in the front row, finally gives Otto the pass.

At the end of the day, Radich found Otto and brought him home. Here, however, all worries have dissipated: Edelsen has returned and can proudly report to Otto that his rare house cat has had offspring - from Radish's dog Harras. All worries are gone, as are Otto's debts with Radich. Thereupon Otto breaks down all tents in the big city - but not before he and Anna become a couple, which has been dressed up especially for him and turned into a beautiful swan.

Reviews

The reviews were significantly more negative than the previous film.

“The setting in which [Otto] celebrates his gags and sometimes plenty of old-fashioned puns seems rather poor and honest. The actors around him are almost always weak, his film is cinema without gloss or sharpness. [...] A total failure: Ute Sander. [...] Seldom has such a crude product placement orgy been celebrated without necessity as in Otto's new film. [...] He brilliantly parodies a commercial for the jeans company Levi's, but immediately hammers the joke to death by following another Levi's parody. "

- Der Spiegel 29/1987

“Quiet comedy with intrusive company advertising, bland and amateurish in the drawing of the secondary characters," spiced "with penetrating janitorial jokes; rather to cry than to laugh. "

Trivia

  • The then still unknown actors Dieter Landuris and Urs Remond can be seen as a football fan (Landuris) and Gaby's friend (Remond) as well as the former TV announcer and voice actress Beate Menner .
  • The ice hockey players appearing are members of Preussen Berlin .
  • In the playing song to Otto's skating performance is Like Ice in the Sunshine of Beagle Music Ltd. from 1986. It serves today as a promotional song for spots for the ice-cream makers Langnese and was for that purpose by several well-known artists gecovert . Otto's skating partner is a man. Two men with beards on the ice are supposed to represent the guitarists, bassists and singers of the US blues rock band ZZ Top .
  • Product placement was carried out intensively - unusually at the time of publication: Waalkes is skating in front of posters by Bauknecht , Levi`s and Jever , and Bauknecht devices can also be seen regularly. You can see the advertising slogan “Otto… I think it's good” from the mail-order company OTTO on a mirror and as a print on Otto's T-shirt, and two Levi's jeans commercials are parodied. Furthermore, the brands of the beer consumed and the cigarettes smoked are clearly visible. The visible cigarette packs are colored red and white in the theatrical version, while in the version broadcast by ZDF they have been colored green and white by video post-processing.
  • Radich's statement to Otto: "So you admit: you know nothing, you can not do anything, and you do nothing", is an allusion to the inscription on Otto's delivery van in Otto - The Film ("knows everything, can do everything, does everything ").
  • After he is stopped by the patrolman, Otto tells him the professor's version of the forgery notice that was on the earlier DM notes.
