Otto Rettenmaier (born July 28, 1926 in Holzmühle , Rosenberg municipality ; † July 23, 2020 ) was a German entrepreneur . He was the owner of the Rettenmaier Group, a conglomerate based in Heilbronn , which, in addition to shares in the J. Rettenmaier & Söhne (JRS) fiber material factory, based in Rosenberg, also made heavy goods vehicles, a real estate company, construction and craft markets and a Bordeaux - wine included. In the list of the 500 richest Germans published by Manager Magazin in 2010 , Otto Rettenmaier was ranked 292nd with an estimated fortune of 400 million euros. In his adopted home Heilbronn, he supported several cultural projects with large donations, most recently in 2010 the renovation of the building Heilbronn City Archives to the House of City History , which he made possible with a donation of 3 million euros.

Life

Rettenmaier was born in 1926 as the son of Josef (1882–1974) and Josefine Rettenmaier in Rosenberg-Holzmühle. He is the second oldest of four siblings. The Rettenmaier family acquired the wood mill, first mentioned in 1497, in 1878 and began producing wood fibers in 1938 .

Otto Rettenmaier attended a humanistic grammar school from 1937 , joined the Wehrmacht in 1943 and studied at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1946 . He became a member of the Catholic student associations KAV Rheno-Nicaria Stuttgart and K.St.V. Askania-Burgundia Berlin . In 1950 he joined his parents' company, where he was managing partner from 1951 , and built a branch in Heilbronn, where he has also lived since 1949. In addition to his work at JRS, where he is active together with his older brother Josef (* 1924), Otto Rettenmaier worked as an entrepreneur in various industries such as strawberry growing and shipping over the following decades . In 1972 he bought the Bordeaux winery Château La Tour-Figeac , in 1984 he set up an Obi construction and home improvement store in Heilbronn , which was followed by two more in 1997 and 2000. In 1988 he bought the insolvent Scheuerle vehicle factory from Pfedelbach, which he merged in 1994 with the French competitor Nicolas from Auxerre to form Transporter Industry International , which was expanded in 2004 with the Ulm-based special vehicle manufacturer KAMAG Transporttechnik . In 1994 Rettenmaier built a retail park on the Heilbronn industrial wasteland Weipert site . The project development company Ripeg , founded in 1994, is not only active in Heilbronn and the surrounding area, but also in Berlin , Halle , Leipzig and Weimar , while OR Energy , founded in 2010, operates two wind farms in Saxony-Anhalt . The companies of the Rettenmaier Group employ numerous people; JRS is the world market leader in fiber production and (as of 2012) has 1200 employees and a turnover of over € 250 million, the TII van division has 720 employees and a turnover of € 235 million. Rettenmaier's fortune is estimated at 400 million euros; In the list of the 500 richest Germans published by Manager Magazin in 2010 , he ranks 292.

Private

On January 26, 1959, Rettenmaier married his wife Lore, b. Spit with whom he had two daughters and a son. The son Otto Maximilian Rettenmaier (* 1962) has been running the Château La Tour-Figeac winery since 1994, while the daughter Susanne Rettenmaier has been running the group's van division. Otto Rettenmaier was a passionate hunter . In 1986 he was president of the Rotary Club Heilbronn.

Patronage

Rettenmaier supported and supports several cultural and scientific projects and institutions, including the University of Hohenheim , whose research activities established the connection to the JRS pulp mills. In 2013, Rettenmaier pledged a donation of 3 million euros to the University of Hohenheim for the new Audimax to be built . The Audimax will be called Otto Rettenmaier Audimax . The new Audimax was inaugurated on November 11, 2016. In Heilbronn, Rettenmaier supported the Teutonic Minster of St. Peter and Paul , the renovation of the Kilian's Tower and the conversion of the city archive building into the House of City History , which he made possible with a donation of 3 million euros.

In 1984 Rettenmaier was made an honorary senator of the University of Hohenheim . After receiving the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon , he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 2005. The Heilbronner Haus der Stadtgeschichte, which he made possible, has been named Otto-Rettenmaier-Haus in his honor since his 85th birthday on July 28, 2011 . On January 31, 2013 Otto Rettenmaier was awarded the Golden Citizen Medal of the Pfedelbach community for his commitment to the Scheuerle vehicle factory . On January 1, 2014, Lortzingstrasse in Pfedelbach was renamed Otto-Rettenmaier-Strasse.
