Otto Leopold Gustav Scherbeing , from 1866 von Scherbening (born October 6, 1817 in Breslau , † November 18, 1878 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

The Scherbeing family came to Germany from southern Russia. The first shard ring in Prussia served under King Friedrich Wilhelm I in the "Alt-Waldow" cuirassier regiment . Otto was a son of the Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Otto Viktor Scherbening (1789-1859) and his wife Leopoldine Antoinette, née Hensel (1796-1869). His brother Rudolf (1823-1870) fell during the war against France as commander of the Guard Field Artillery Regiment near Sedan .

Military career

On October 1, 1833, Scherbening joined the 8th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army and graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School in 1834/36 . At the end of October 1836 he was promoted to aggregate second lieutenant , was appointed artillery officer on December 30, 1837 with a patent dated November 13, 1837, and was assigned to the 8th Artillery Brigade in mid-June 1838. For further training he attended the General War School from April 1841 to July 1844 . Then he was fireworks lieutenant in 1845/46. This was followed by a position as adjutant and accounting officer in the fortress reserve artillery department in Mainz, as well as being promoted to prime lieutenant . In 1850/51 Scherening was assigned to the topographical department of the Great General Staff . This command was interrupted by the mobilization in 1850/51 and he was active as commander of an ammunition column during this time.

From March 2, 1852 to June 17, 1853, Scherbening was in the 4th Artillery Brigade and was then transferred to the 6th Artillery Brigade under promotion to captain . He returned to the General Staff on November 1, 1853 and was promoted to major on May 30, 1857, initially without a patent . With the award of the patent for his rank, Scherbening was appointed artillery officer from the place in Wesel on August 4, 1857 . On April 21, 1859 he was promoted to division commander in the 3rd Artillery Regiment and on October 18, 1861 to lieutenant colonel. During the war against Denmark in 1864 he took part in the attack on Fehmarn as well as the siege and the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen . For his work, Scherbeing received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. On June 25, 1864, he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 6.

Scherbening was born on September 1, 1865 together with his brother Rudolf by King I. Wilhelm into the hereditary Prussian nobility raised .

During the war against Austria in 1866, Scherbening was in command of the VI reserve artillery. Army Corps.
