description

View from the south of the ensemble of buildings of the PS-Speicher museum with the listed, former granary

More than 300 historical bicycles, motorcycles and automobiles from the past 130 years will be presented, telling the story of motorized locomotion from its beginnings to current visions of the future. The exhibition is mainly based on exhibits from the world's largest collection of German motorcycles, which the private collector Karl-Heinz Rehkopf has compiled and donated to the Kornhaus Foundation.

In addition, excerpts from the world's largest collection of historic small and micro cars from the former museum in Störy (Hildesheim district) are presented in a special exhibition . In 2015, the PS-Speicher took over the historic, mostly ready-to-drive commercial vehicles with more than 100 exhibits from the former private mobile commercial vehicle museum in Sittensen. In November 2015, an adjacent hall of 800 m² was set up for a special exhibition on the subject of racing. Jutta Kleinschmidt and Toni Mang made the opening .

The area with over 25,000 m² is located not far from the Tiedexer Tor . The historic granary from 1898 was renovated from 2012 to 2014 in accordance with monument regulations and now houses the approximately 4,000 m² permanent exhibition. Outside there is a further 2,000 m² of exhibition space and 500 m² for temporary and special exhibitions. The offer is rounded off by a thematically designed catering area and a publicly accessible racing simulator with 6 degrees of freedom and a Porsche 911 that is unique in Germany .

Exhibition concept

The PS-Speicher is not a museum in the classical sense, but an experience exhibition that aims to provide new impulses again and again through special exhibitions and changing productions. It presents all development phases of individual motorization on a good 4,000 m², but also focuses on their importance for society. With the help of modern media technology and an innovative exhibition design, the content is clearly and partly interactively staged.

Permanent exhibition

On six floors, the permanent exhibition leads chronologically through all development phases of the motorized vehicles. It illustrates the economic, political and social conditions in which people have been moving on wheels for over 130 years. More than 300 exhibits, including numerous rarities from the world's largest private collection of German motorcycles, tell stories of technical progress and individual mobility. At over 80 multimedia stations, visitors can explore the social background.

The tour through the six floors of the former granary is designed as a time travel through the history of motorized locomotion and leads chronologically from top to bottom. It begins with the invention of the bicycle, motorcycle and automobile in the 19th century, presents key technical achievements of the 20th century and finally ends in a time tunnel that presents future-oriented visions of the second millennium. Numerous active stations, in-depth texts and play options as well as several photo stations are integrated into the exhibition design. But visitors can also get behind the wheel and chauffeur through the city traffic of the 1920s in a Hanomag "Kommissbrot" .

The presented topics in the overview:

  • Hall 1 - The engine hits the road (1812 to 1914)
  • Hall 2 - The motorcycle for everyone (1914 to 1929)
  • Hall 3 - People's Vehicles (1930 to 1945)
  • Room 4 - Mobility for Reconstruction (1945 to 1955)
  • Room 5 - Hard Facts in East and West (1950 to 1961)
  • Room 6 - Leisure Society (1961 to 1970)
  • Room 7 - Stronger - Faster - Safer (1970 to 2010)
  • Hall 8 - Timetunnel - Visions of the future (from 2010)

Characteristic of this exhibition is the consistent staging of the exhibits in their socio-economic context: Not only a street scene from the “Roaring Twenties” , but also the detailed reproduction of the milk bar from the 50s or the disco fever of the “Seventies” convey background knowledge and above all the lifestyle of the different eras. In addition, the visions of the future presented in the time tunnel offer numerous points of reference to current socio-political discussions about energy efficiency, electric mobility or intelligent networking in traffic.

Temporary and special exhibitions

The PS memory can equip temporary and special exhibitions from its own depot, e.g. B. with a collection of historic Lanz Bulldog tractors . Since 2012, the foundation has also had the world's largest collection of small and micro cars from the town of Störy in southern Lower Saxony . There, the Künnecke couple collected historic small and micro cars and exhibited them in a private museum until 2004. 26 “Mini-Chrome Jewels” have been offering insights into the time of the economic miracle in a special show since the opening , including: a. a Goggomobil and a Kleinschnittger convertible.

Granary exhibition

In a separately accessible exhibition on the historical granary , film and photo documents as well as an interactive model illustrate the architecture and history of the building as well as the functionality of the partly well-preserved historical storage and bottling plant.

The PS.Halle as part of the building ensemble

PS hall

Another hall was added to the building complex in 2016. The building called PS-Halle has an exhibition area of 750 m². Frauke Heiligenstadt helped lay the foundation stone for this new building . The inauguration took place in October 2016. a. an eagle type 10 is presented.

The PS hall is also used occasionally for cultural events. A few weeks before the inauguration, the opening concert of the Lower Saxony Music Days 2016 with Martin Grubinger took place there.

PS depot truck + bus

Also in June 2016, the truck + bus exhibition opened in Otto Hahn Park in a hall with an area of 6000 m² , showing over 220 mostly drivable commercial vehicles.

Exhibits

Since the opening, around 300 exhibits have been permanently shown in the permanent and special exhibition, the composition of which changes again and again. The first bicycles, motorcycles and the Benz patented motor car Victoria from 1894 were followed by many variants and developments of two-, three- and four-wheelers of the 20th century. A contemporary Porsche 911 as a racing simulator, future-oriented drive technologies and creative visions build a bridge to the current millennium.

Among the exhibits are u. a. a replica of the Daimler riding wagon , a replica of the “ Schlörwagens ” on a scale of 1: 5, the first two-wheeler designated as a “motorcycle” by Hildebrand and Wolfmüller , a Victoria KR 1, a Glas Goggo 200 and a Fuldamobil S-1 .

sculpture

Side view of the sculpture

In 2014, the sculpture mobility was installed on the outdoor area of the PS-Speicher , a project of the foundation founded by Carl-Ernst Büchting : It was built according to plans by Hans-Oiseau Kalkmann ; Students from the Paul Gerhardt School Dassel and the Löns Realschule Einbeck made a contribution.

The sculpture mobility consists of a wheel with a diameter of three meters, which is mainly made of stainless steel : Words are depicted in concentric circles on the wheel body , which are illuminated from within in the dark. The inner ring has an acoustic installation that can be triggered by getting closer to the center. The sculpture is placed on a granite block.

The subject of mobility, staged in the PS memory using vintage cars , is complemented by the sculpture using terms and sounds. The terms are bundled into a total of four different groups on the front and back of the wheel center. Noises caused by the movement of objects make up the sound sculpture in the middle of the wheel.
