After whites first settled in the area of ​​today's city in 1857, the place was connected to the railroad network of Illinois Central and Chicago Northwestern in the 1860s . The settlement was named after the settler and first postman Pascal P. Parker . In December 1874, Parkersburg was incorporated as an independent municipality with effect from January 1875.
