Paul Deschanel
Paul Deschanel (born February 13, 1855 in Schaerbeek / Schaarbeek near Brussels , † April 28, 1922 in Paris ) was a French politician ( ARD ), senator and from February to September 1920 President of the Third Republic .
Life
Paul Deschanel was the son of the politician and writer Émile Deschanel . Sub-prefect of Brest since 1876 , he quickly climbed the political career ladder and was republican MP for the Eure-et-Loir department from 1885 . In 1896 he became Vice President of the House of Representatives, from 1898 to 1902 and again from 1912 to 1920 President of the Chamber of Deputies .
Deschanel was a participant in the peace negotiations on the Versailles Treaty . When asked about the outcome of the negotiations, the following words have come down to us:
"We just signed World War II."
In 1920 he prevailed against Georges Clemenceau in the election for president as the successor to Raymond Poincaré . Deschanel served from February 17 to September 21, 1920 and was the only French president who had not previously held a ministerial office.
On May 23, 1920 he fell off the train while trying to close a sliding window on his train compartment. Fortunately for him, the train was moving slowly at this point and he landed on the grass. He is later found by André Radeau.
Very soon after taking office, mental problems and signs of senile dementia became apparent . He had to give way to Prime Minister Alexandre Millerand , but became a senator and died two years later of pneumonia . The Deschanel Peak , a mountain in Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula, bears his name.
