Paul Gustav Grabbe since 1866 Graf , ( Russian Павел Христофорович Граббе Pawel Christoforowitsch Grabbe ; born December 10, jul. / 21st December 1789 greg. In Kexholm , † July 5 jul. / 17th July 1875 greg. ) Was a Russian general of the cavalry .
Life
Origin and family
Paul came from a Finnish noble family . His parents were the Russian lieutenant in the Siberian infantry regiment, who later became the district rent master Christoph Valentin Grabbe († 1792) and Justina Regina, née Hauser († 1828) from Dorpat .
On March 3rd, Grabbe and his descent were accepted as an honorary member of the Estonian knighthood . On 28 October 1866 he was in the Russian count conditions raised .
The coat of arms is silver and blue divided , above a black eagle , down three hexagonal silver tag whose border runs in each of the corners in a head. On the helmet with black-silver and blue-silver covers a black open flight , in between a small shield of the lower coat of arms.
His first marriage was to Vera Mikhailovna Skoropadska (1801-1828) and, after her death in 1830, to Katharina Roola († 1857). The second marriage resulted in three daughters and four sons, including:
- Nicholas (1832–1896), Russian lieutenant general
- Michail (1834–1877), Russian major general
- Catherine (1839–1888), ⚭ Baron Alexander Paul von Vietinghoff called Scheel (1836–1896), Russian lieutenant general
- Vladimir (1843-1893), Russian major general
Career
Grabbe began his career in the 1st Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg . In 1805 he was promoted to lieutenant. and took part in the coalition and liberation wars . Here, he could at Prussian Eylau , Borodino and Tarutino distinguished especially, rising in 1808 to lieutenant , 1812 to staff captain , and finally in 1814 to captain on. After his promotion to colonel in 1816, he took over as commander of the Lubensky Hussar Regiment from 1817 to 1822. After that he was out of service until 1823 .
During the Russo-Turkish War he was the commander of the avant-garde in Little Wallachia . For his service in the attack on Rachowo in 1829 he was promoted to major general. During the campaign, Grabbe also commanded the Novorossiysk Dragoons Regiment for two months.
In 1831 he became chief of staff of the 1st Infantry Division and as such took part in the suppression of the November Uprising. He rose to lieutenant general in 1838 and became commander of the 2nd Dragoon Division and the troops of the Black Sea Line. In the second half of the Caucasus War he was considered one of the most capable and successful Russian generals. As the commander of operations in the North Caucasus , he was able to inflict a severe defeat on Imam Shamil by taking the mountain fortress of Achulgo. He was then appointed adjutant general and deputy military governor in Estonia in 1839 . He remained in this position until 1853.
In the meantime he had commanded the Russian contingent in the Hungarian War of Independence in 1849 . With the outbreak of the Crimean War he became war governor in Reval and in 1855 was promoted to general of the cavalry. From 1862 to 1866 he was Commander in Chief of the Don Cossack Army. In 1866 Grabbe became a member of the State Council .
