Paul Kuhn (born September 12, 1874 in Schweidnitz , Province of Silesia , † May 20, 1966 in New York ) was a German opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Kuhn studied law in Breslau and, after passing his state examination, worked as a court assessor before he decided to train his voice.

He began his stage career in 1902 at the Freiburg im Breisgau City Theater and was a guest at the Zurich City Theater in his first year . He then moved to the Hoftheater in Darmstadt until 1907 and was then at the Hoftheater in Munich from 1907 to 1917 , where he performed the role of Matteo in the world premiere of " Violanta " by Erich Wolfgang Korngold on March 28, 1916 . His major roles in this house were David in “ Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ” and Mime in “ Siegfried ”, both of which he sang under well-known conductors such as Bruno Walter and Felix Mottl . While working at the Munich Court Theater, guest appearances at the Wiesbaden Court Theater (1908) and the Leipzig Opera House (1909). From 1910 to 1914 he took part in the performances of “ The Ring of the Nibelung ” at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels and on June 12, 1917 sang the role of the Bishop of Budoja in the world premiere of Hans Pfitzner'sPalestrina ”. In that year he ended his engagement in Munich, but continued to make guest appearances on the leading stages in the German-speaking area.

From 1917 to 1918 he was engaged as a guest at the Stadttheater von Augsburg , from 1918 to 1921 at the Nationaltheater Mannheim and from 1922 to 1923 at the Vienna State Opera .

In 1920 he sang the role of Valzacchi in the Spanish premiere of " Der Rosenkavalier " at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and in 1922 at the Salzburg Festival, the Basilio in " Le nozze di Figaro ". From 1924 to 1926 he worked as a singer and director at the Stadttheater Trier and from 1926 to 1927 at the Berlin State Opera , before he had to leave Germany as a Jew in 1933 and emigrated to the USA , where he worked as a singing teacher in New York. In 1936 he made guest appearances at the Graz Opera House and made guest appearances in Hungary and France .

Paul Kuhn had a significant art of characterization and flexibility of the voice and was characterized by an unmistakable stage presence. He was married to the soprano Charlotte Kuhn-Brunner (1878-1958). Before he died very old in New York, he was the last living Royal Bavarian Chamber Singer.
