Paul von Ravenstein
Paul von Ravenstein (born October 21, 1854 in Breslau ; † March 8, 1938 in Karlsruhe ) was a German landscape painter .
Life
family
The father of the landscape painter Paul von Ravenstein was a doctor . Ravenstein enjoyed a careful upbringing and knew even as a schoolboy that he wanted to devote himself to painting . He was enthusiastic about light and life in Italy and among other things learned the Italian language .
In 1886 he married Helene von Schwind , the youngest daughter of the painter Moritz von Schwind, in Starnberg . He lived with his wife in Karlsruhe and also had his studio there . Already during his lifetime he achieved fame and reputation, and the Grand Duke awarded him the title of professor. At times he lived in Villingen , where he lived in a holiday home.
He died at the age of 84 on March 8, 1938 in Karlsruhe.
education
From 1865 to high school in 1873 he attended the Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium in his hometown. At the age of 21, in 1875, he began his studies at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School in Karlsruhe, first with Hans Gude , whose naturalism initially shaped him, and then with his successor Gustav Schönleber , whose color palette impressed him very much.
At the end of the 1870s he made extensive study trips to Italy and southern France , partly with his teacher Gustav Schönleber, partly with other painter colleagues. He brought along numerous landscape sketches and genre representations from popular life. But not only did he bring beautifully colored landscapes with him from the south, he also traveled to his Silesian homeland, the Giant Mountains , South Tyrol , Bavaria and Franconia , the Lake Constance region , the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb .

He studied the changes in colors caused by light very carefully and presented them in fine nuances. While the influences of his teacher Schönleber can still be seen in his early pictures, he later found his own style. He loved nature and observed it very closely, especially trees interested him. His depictions of the interior of forests, in which silence and solitude predominate, are to be emphasized.
He also mastered portrait painting , he was an excellent draftsman , etcher and lithographer as well as a member of the Association for Original Etching in Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Artists Association.
His paintings were not only shown in exhibitions in Karlsruhe, but also in Munich , Dresden , Baden-Baden , Berlin , Zurich and Vienna . At the World Exhibition in Melbourne in 1880 , he won second prize.
The Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe owns some important works, among others

He is also represented in other German museums, e. B. in the Pinakothek in Munich, in the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg , in the Städt. Gallery in Albstadt ; many paintings are also in private hands.
