Perry Rhodan Neo is the title of the German science fiction series of the same name , which has been published every two weeks since September 30, 2011 in the form of pocket notebooks by Verlagsunion Pabel-Moewig (VPM), a subsidiary of the Bauer Media Group . The subtitle of the series is "The future begins all over again" - it is intended as an alternative restart of the Perry Rhodan novel series . Like the Perry Rhodan series, Perry Rhodan Neo is a sequel story in which each novel builds on the previous one. Many heroes of the Perry Rhodan series also appear with the name in the Perry Rhodan Neo series , but otherwise the series is very different from the original series.
Perry Rhodan and Perry Rhodan Neo each form a completely independent "cosmos". According to the editor-in-chief Klaus N. Frick , there will never be any overlaps or references between the series like the Atlan series. It was ruled out that a crossover between the two series was ever planned or intended.
General
While the Perry Rhodan booklet series was based on the geopolitical events of the world in the middle of the 20th century and had the plot begin in the near future, Perry Rhodan Neo 50 years later starts from the real world of the early 21st century and also begins in a near future. Perry Rhodan does not fly to the moon in 1971, but in Neo 1 only in 2036. The plot therefore takes an alternative course due to the changed starting position. The classic motifs of the Perry Rhodan series will also be relocated to the near future and interpreted accordingly. New figures are introduced and known figures are shown in a new light. As the series matures, Perry Rhodan Neo moves further and further away from the original.
The series is published biweekly in pocket booklets of 160 pages. This corresponds to an average of approx. 280,000 characters including spaces. In contrast to the original series, which is divided into cycles of up to 100 novels, the Perry Rhodan Neo series is divided into seasons of 8–12 novels each. After the first three seasons with eight pocket issues each, the series from Neo 25 to Neo 84 was consistently divided into seasons of 12 novels, and after a long series of 16 issues, the seasons since Neo 101 each have ten novels. Exception: the season of volume 190–199 with nine novels. In addition to the pocket notebooks, the series also appears digitally as an eBook under the label Perry Rhodan Digital , just like the printed pocket notebooks at VPM. In addition - from the beginning - there is a parallel and simultaneous publication as an audio book as a download, produced by Eins A Medien . Each episode is about six hours. Double mp3 CDs appear with a slight delay (approx. 3–4 months). So-called bundles have been published since 2014, each comprising four double editions, i.e. a total of 8 mp3 CDs. The speakers are Axel Gottschick and Hanno Dinger. Markus Klauk spoke in episode no.2 , Tom Jacobs no.4 and 6.
A Japanese translation of the series is also being published in Japan by Hayakawa Publishing Corporation .
Between 2014 and 2018, a book edition of the series was also published four times a year as a so-called platinum edition . This hardcover - anthologies contained the original pocket booklet editions of the series in a slightly revised form, supplemented by a respective short story each band a few months later were also released as an eBook as a neo-stories.
Creation of the novels
The working methods of the editorial team, the synopsis authors and the writing authors are similar to those of the Perry Rhodan series. The series is directed by the so-called Exposé authors in collaboration with the series editor-in-chief. On the basis of the plot outline agreed at an authors' conference, they create a kind of framework for the future plot, the synopsis, which they fit into the ongoing narrative of the series and then give the authors of the novels this framework. Each author receives every synopsis in order to be able to follow and observe the detailed storyline of a novel and, in total, the series plot. An exposé contains the plot of the respective novel, background information on the overall plot and classification so as not to lose sight of the cycle goal, as well as technical and scientific data.
