Peter Hommelhoff

Peter Hommelhoff (born September 13, 1942 in Hamburg ) is a German legal scholar and was rector of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 2001 to 2007 .

After graduating from the Johanneum School of Academics in Hamburg, Hommelhoff studied law at the Free University of Berlin and the Universities of Tübingen and Freiburg from 1964 . After the first (1968) and second state examination (1971), he initially worked as a lawyer in Freiburg . In 1973 the doctorate to Dr. iur. with a thesis on liability for material defects in company acquisitions at Fritz Rittner in Freiburg. In 1974 he switched to Marcus Lutter as a research assistant at the Ruhr University in Bochum , where he received his habilitation in 1981 with a thesis on corporate management duties .

Then Hommelhoff was a professor at the Faculty of Law at Bielefeld University . In 1990 he moved to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, where he was rector from 2001 to 2007. From 1996 to 2007 he was a member of the Standing Commission for Teaching and Studies of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), from 2004 to 2006 as spokesman for the universities. In November 2007, Hommelhoff joined the auditing company KPMG as a partner and is now associated with it as Of Counsel. To this end, Hommelhoff has been the Scientific Director of the Audit Committee Institute (ACI) eV, which is funded by KPMG, since his retirement. Since 2010 he has also been Chairman of the University Council of the Andrássy University Budapest . The Universities of Cracow (2002) Montpellier I (2005) each awarded him an honorary doctorate in law; In 2009 the Heidelberg University for Jewish Studies awarded him an honorary doctorate in philosophy.

He is co-editor of the journal for corporate and corporate law and the European Company and Financial Law Review , both of which are published by Walter de Gruyter . He played a key role in creating the ECFR. At the beginning of 2020 he left the management of the two magazines after 23 years. He is also the editor of the AHW - Treatises on German and European Commercial and Business Law, published by Wolters Kluwer.

His most prominent student (doctoral candidate) is Stephan Harbarth , honorary professor at Heidelberg University and President of the Federal Constitutional Court since May 15, 2020 .

Hommelhoff is the author of numerous articles, books and commentaries on the law of the stock corporation and the GmbH , the law of transformation and accounting law .

He is married to the Heidelberg City Councilor (FDP) Margret Hommelhoff (née Middelschulte) and has two children. His daughter, Kirsten Hommelhoff, is the head of the Mercator Foundation's Project Center Berlin and will become the new General Secretary of the Federal Association of German Foundations on September 1, 2020. According to the press release, the fully qualified lawyer had previously headed the office of the then deputy parliamentary group chairman and foreign policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Werner Hoyer , and worked as a legal advisor in the corporate board of Deutsche Bahn AG .

He has been a member of the Tübingen student association Saxonia since 1965.
