Peter S. Kim
Peter S. Kim (* 1958 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American biochemist . He is best known for his pioneering work on protein folding , the recognition of macromolecules and proteins in the virus envelope . He is Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University .
There is a biomathematician of the same name at the University of Sydney who publishes, for example, on the grandmother hypothesis and the spread of viruses .
Life
Kim received a BA in Chemistry from Cornell University in 1979 and a Ph.D. from Robert Lesh Baldwin at Stanford University in 1985. in biochemistry , title of work was Characterization of protein folding intermediates . He did not complete his additional medical studies.
From 1985 Kim worked at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research , in 1990 he received a first professorship ( assistant professor , then associate professor ) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , and in 1995 he became a full professor of biology . From 1990 to 2001 Kim also conducted research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), of which he has been a member of the medical advisory board since 2016.
In 2001, Kim joined Merck Research Laboratories (the research and development division of Merck & Co. ) in North Wales (a suburb of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ), which he took over in 2003.
In 2013, Kim moved to Stanford University , where he is Professor of Biochemistry at the Medical School. His successor at Merck was Roger M. Perlmutter .
Kim is married and has three children.
Act
Using the coiled coil model, Kim was able to elucidate important protein-protein interactions , including those between the two oncogenes Fas and Jun . Other pioneering work described the spring -like mechanism by which influenza viruses in host cells penetrate and similarly with the HI virus is. More recent work by Kim is on cancer immunotherapy .
At Merck, he was responsible for the development of the HPV vaccine Gardasil, vaccines against rotavirus (Rotateq) and against the measles virus in adults (Zostavax), as well as novel drugs against diabetes mellitus ( sitagliptin ), HIV ( raltegravir ) and hepatitis C ( boceprevir) ).
Kim is the author of more than 130 scientific publications and holds 17 patents.
His students include Brenda Schulman and Jonathan Weissman .
Awards
In 1993 Kim received the NAS Award in Molecular Biology from the National Academy of Sciences , in 1994 the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry from the American Chemical Society , in 1998 the Ho-Am Award in Science from the Samsung Foundation, and in 1999 the Hans Neurath Award from the Protein Society. In 2002 Kim gave a Harvey Lecture .
In 1997 Peter S. Kim was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , of which he was a member of the Council from 2015 to 2018. He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1999 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008.
