Harry Alan Towers (born October 19, 1920 in London , England - † July 31, 2009 ) was a British film producer and screenwriter .
Life
Towers initially wrote several novels under the pseudonym Peter Welbeck before he began writing film scripts in 1946 . He had already started writing for the radio during World War II in the service of the Royal Air Force . In 1952/53 he produced the radio program The Adventures of Horatio Hornblower based on the novels by CS Forester . Inspired by the movie " The Third Man " (1949) with Orson Welles , Towers and his company Towers of London also produced a multi-part radio series under the title The Lives of Harry Lime .
Since the early 1960s, Towers has also produced films, mostly based on its own scripts, as well as adventure films based on stories by Sax Rohmer (Doctor Fu Man Chu , Sumuru) and Edgar Wallace (Sanders). In the late 1960s, Towers also produced some films by Spanish director enfant terribles Jess Franco . Film productions he made (often in coproduction with Cannon Films ) in the late 1980s were marked by a lot of violence.
Towers was married to the Austrian actress Maria Rohm since 1964 . He died on July 31, 2009 after a brief illness.
