Pieksämäki [ ˈpie̯ksæˌmæki ] is a town with 17,933 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in eastern Finland . It is located about 300 kilometers northeast of the capital Helsinki in the Lake District of the landscape Savo .

The place became independent as a market town in 1930 under the name Pieksämä . In 1948 the market town was renamed Pieksänmäki, and since 1962 the place has had city rights . The outskirts of the city formed the rural community Pieksämäki ( Pieksämä maalaiskunta ), which merged in 2004 with the communities Jäppilä and Virtasalmi to form Pieksänmaa . On January 1, 2007, Pieksämäki and Pieksänmaa merged. The new town bears the name Pieksämäki and the coat of arms of the former municipality Pieksänmaa.

Pieksämäki is one of the most important transport hubs in Finland. The north-south connection from Kouvola to Kontiomäki and the east-west axis from Jyväskylä to Joensuu intersect here ; Pieksämäki is also the terminus of both a railway line to Parikkala in southeast Finland and the Jyväskylä – Pieksämäki railway .

The wooden parish church of Pieksämäki was built in 1753 according to plans by A. Sorsa.
