Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn
Pierre Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Nhơn ( Vietnamese : Phêrô Nguyễn Văn Nhơn ; born April 1, 1938 in Da Lạt , Vietnam ) is a Vietnamese clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Hanoi .
Life
His name combines western naming tradition ( Pierre as first name before the family name Nguyễn ) with Vietnamese ( Văn Nhơn as a personal name is behind the family name).
Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn entered the St. Joseph Seminary in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City ) on October 26, 1949 . From 1958 to 1967 he studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the Pius X seminary in Đà Lạt . Peter Nguyễn Văn Nhơn received on 21 December 1967, the sacrament of Holy Orders .
From 1968 to 1972 he was professor at the seminary in Da Lat and from 1972 to 1975 he was the rain . The seminary in Da Lat On April 1, 1975, Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn was pastor of the cathedral parish in Đà Lạt and on September 10, 1975 he was also vicar general of the diocese of Đà Lạt .
On 11 October 1991 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Coadjutor Bishop of Da Lat. The episcopal ordination donated him the Bishop of Đà Lạt, Barthélémy Nguyễn Sơn Lâm PSS on December 3rd of the same year; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Nha Trang , Paul Nguyễn Văn Hoà , and the Bishop of Phan Thiêt , Nicolas Huỳnh Văn Nghi . Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn chose the motto Illum oportet crescere (“He must grow.”), Which comes from the Gospel according to John ( John 3.30 EU ). On March 23, 1994, Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn succeeded Barthélémy Nguyễn Sơn Lâm PSS, who was appointed Bishop of Thanh Hoá , Bishop of Đà Lạt.
On April 22nd, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to Coadjutor Archbishop of Hanoi . Pierre Nguyễn Văn Nhơn became Archbishop of Hanoi on May 13, 2010, succeeding Joseph Ngô Quang Kiệt , who resigned for health reasons.
In the solemn consistory of February 14, 2015, Pope Francis accepted him into the college of cardinals as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Tommaso Apostolo .
On November 17, 2018, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
