Life
Early years and family
He was born in Paris as the second son of Pierre César de Cambout, Marquis de Coislin and Madeleine Séguier, eldest daughter of Pierre Séguier , Chancellor of France . His older brother was Armand du Cambout de Coislin (1635-1702), French duke and member of the Académie française . His nephews were Pierre du Cambout, duc de Coislin (1654–1710), French duke and member of the Académie française and Henri-Charles du Cambout de Coislin , Bishop of Metz (1697–1732) and member of the Académie française.
He was baptized on February 13, 1638 in the Saint-Eustache church . Since his father was killed in the siege of Aire-sur-la-Lys in 1641 , he and his older brother were raised by Jean Ballesdens , Séguiers ' secretary. At the age of 17 he became the first almsman of the French king. He studied at the Sorbonne and received a doctorate in theology .
Spiritual career
The ordination received Pierre de Cambout on 16 August 1665 by the Archbishop of Paris , Hardouin de Péréfixe de Beaumont . After Louis XIV had proposed him on May 24, 1665, de Cambout was elected Bishop of Orléans on March 29, 1666. He was ordained bishop on June 20, 1666 by the Archbishop of Paris, who had recently ordained him a priest; Co- consecrators were Ferdinand de Neufville de Villeroy , Bishop of Chartres , and Dominique de Ligni , Bishop of Meaux .
When the theologian Pasquier Quesnel, accused of " Jansenism ", had to flee Paris in 1681, Pierre de Cambout granted him refuge.
In 1685, after the Edict of Nantes was withdrawn, a regiment of dragons was sent to Orléans to convert the Calvinists who lived there by force. Bishop de Cambout housed the officers in the bishop's palace and earned the soldiers' respect. In this way he was able to prevent acts of violence against the Reformed, whom he always referred to as his "diocesans".
In the consistory of July 22, 1697, Pierre de Cambout was created cardinal. He took part in the conclave of 1700 , from which Clemens XI. emerged as Pope. On March 30, 1700 he received the titular church Trinità al Monte Pincio as a cardinal priest .
death
He died in Versailles at the age of 69 and was laid out in Orléans Cathedral, where he was also buried.
