The Piz Giuv ( Giuv Rhaeto-Romanic = yoke ; in German also called Schattig Wichel ) is 3096  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Glarus Alps . It is located about five kilometers north of the Oberalp Pass and about seven kilometers west of the Reuss Valley on the border between the Swiss cantons of Uri and Graubünden .

The next northern neighbor is the Sunnig Wichel, which goes north through the Pörtlilücke ( 2506  m above sea level ) from 3073  m above sea level. M. high Bristen is separated. Directly to the east is the Piz Nair ( 3059  m above sea level ) from which to the northeast over the Chrüzli Pass ( 2347  m above sea level ) a ridge to 3328  m above sea level. M. high Oberalpstock pulls. A ridge runs to the southwest as far as the Fellilücke ( 2476  m above sea level ). To the south, three shorter cross ridges branch off, which separate four valleys, Val Strem , Val Milà , Val Giuv and Val Val (from east to west).

Climbing opportunities

The Etzlihütte ( SAC ) at 2052  m above sea level serves as a base for an ascent . M. the hut can be reached from Bristen in northern Maderanertal or from the south via the center plates respectively Chrüzlipass that of Sedrun and with lift help of Disentis is achievable. The Piz Giuv can also be climbed as a day tour directly from the Oberalp Pass.

In summer, the route from the Etzlihütte is an alpine tour with rocky (sometimes very brittle) and ice passages. In late winter the Piz Giuv is a ski tour summit .

mineralogy

The Piz Giuv and its entire surroundings are very interesting from a mineralogical point of view. For a good 200 years the local crystal seekers (also called radiators ) have been looking for smoky quartz and other minerals in Val Giuv and the neighboring valleys. The most important deposits in the Piz Giuv area include: smoky quartz , milarite , adulara , titanite , epidote , calcite , amethyst , apatite and pyrite . The smoky quartz from Val Giuv are among the most beautiful and sought-after in the world. To search for the crystals you need a fee-based permit from the municipality.
