The forerunner of the convent was the monastery of Our Lady . In 1129 Archbishop Norbert von Xanten transferred the collegiate monastery Our Dear Women (syn. Marienstift) to the newly founded Premonstratensian order . The monastery became the mother monastery of the order.

After the last Catholic provost of the monastery died in 1597, the remaining Catholic conventuals left the monastery on April 4, 1601. In 1628 the monastery was returned to the Premonstratensians. In 1632 they left it for good, taking the library and archive with them.

Since 1991 Premonstratensians have been living in Magdeburg in a dependent priory of the Hamborn Abbey in Duisburg - Hamborn . Currently five live canons in Magdeburg. The construction of a new building is planned in Magdeburg's old town. Together with the parish hall of St. Petri, a comprehensive atrium complex is to be created. The university and future monastery church of St. Petri , the Magdalenenkapelle , the parish hall and the new monastery will then form a new spiritual center for Magdeburg and the entire region.
