The St. Ludgerus Bochum-Querenburg seminary was the training center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Essen for candidates for priesthood until the training was relocated to the local diocese in Münster in October 2012 . It is now taking place in the Collegium Borromaeum .

Use as a seminary

The St. Ludgerus seminary took over from the institution of the same name, which had been based in Essen-Werden for decades. St. Ludgerus is the patron saint of Essen-Werden . The seminar was on the northwestern edge of Werden on the slopes of the Ruhr valley up to the rural Essen-Schuir . In earlier years, many Catholic theology students lived in the preparatory college near the Ruhr University while they were studying in Bochum . After completing their university education, the candidates for the priesthood moved to Essen-Werden to begin their further training as deacons and with the aim of priestly ordination. This move had become dispensable with the expanded use of the preparatory college as a seminary in the wake of the sharp decline in the number of applicants for the priestly profession.

The former seminary was housed in the rooms of the former Episcopal Studienkolleg in the south-east of the Ruhr University, about 10-15 minutes' walk south-east of the university campus, as well as in a rural setting on the Lottental near the botanical garden .

Todays use

In the summer of 2013, the Bochum Academic Promotion Agency took over the former seminary to use it as a dormitory for students at Bochum's universities. In spring 2015, it made the building available to the district government as a dormitory for refugees.
