Río Mulato (also: Río Mulatos ) is a town in the Potosí department in the highlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Río Mulato is the most populous town in the canton of Coroma in the municipality of Uyuni in the province of Antonio Quijarro . The village is located at an altitude of 3822  m at the mouth of the Río Puitokho in the Río Mulato , which in turn flows in a north-westerly direction towards the Río Márquez , which flows about 65 kilometers north of Río Mulato into the southern part of the Poopó Lake .

Río Mulato is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera Central in the east. The region's climate is arid and characterized by a typical time of day climate.

The mean average temperature of the region is just under 9 ° C (see climate diagram Pampa Aullagas) and fluctuates only insignificantly between 5 ° C in June and July and 11 ° C from November to March. The annual precipitation is around 300 mm, with a pronounced dry season from April to October with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and only a few months with sufficient humidity; the wettest month is January with just over 70 mm monthly precipitation.

Transport network

Río Mulato is located at a distance of 305 kilometers by road west of Potosí , the capital of the department.

From Potosí, the national road Ruta 1 leads northwest via Tarapaya , Yocalla and Ventilla and after 203 kilometers reaches the city of Challapata . From here the route 30 leads south via Santiago de Huari and Sevaruyo towards Uyuni at the salt lake of the same name Salar de Uyuni and after another 102 kilometers reaches the village of Río Mulato .

Río Mulato is also the station of a railway line that runs from Oruro via Uyuni to Villazón on the Argentine border and offers a connection four times a week through the Empresa Ferroviaria Andina railway company . In the past, Río Mulato was also the end point of a railway line that led from Potosí to Río Mulato and, with the Estación Cóndor station at 4786 m above sea level, had the second highest train station on earth until 2006, after Ticlio in Peru ; the Potosí-Río Mulato railway line is now closed.

Due to the historically evolved population distribution, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population, in the municipality of Uyuni 43.4 percent of the population speak Quechua .
