Rúnar Már Sigurjónsson (born June 18, 1990 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic national football player . The central midfielder was first called up for the Icelandic national soccer team in 2012 , but was initially only used in friendly matches. In October 2017 he had his first competitive game. At club level he played mainly for Valur Reykjavík in Iceland , but also in Sweden, Switzerland and now in Kazakhstan.

Career

society

Rúnar played at the age of 15 in 2005 for UMF Tindastóll in the 2nd deild karla , the 3rd Icelandic league, and after relegating to the 3rd deild karla , he played there another season. In 2007 he moved within the 3rd deild karla to Ýmir Kópavogur , the B team of HK Kópavogur and then played for the A team of HK in the first Icelandic league. He played his first first division game on June 2, 2008 shortly before his 18th birthday against champions Valur Reykjavík . He was substituted on in the 82nd minute when the score was 2-2 - the goal to 2-2 was conceded in the same minute by a converted penalty - and then his team added two goals to the 4-2 victory. His team could only win a total of five games, but he was there in all wins. But also with seven defeats. As the penultimate HK then rose to the second division. In 2009 he only missed a second division game and his team was promoted to third. He then switched to Valur. There he played in 20 of 22 league games and finished the season in 7th place. In 2011 they were able to improve by two places, but in 2012 they fell back to 8th place. He then moved to the Netherlands on loan to the first division promoted FC Zwolle , but was not used there due to an injury. So he returned to Valur for the 2013 season, but only played there on the first ten match days.

Then he moved to Sweden and played for GIF Sundsvall . First two seasons in the second division , because as third in the 2013 season they lost the relegation game against the third from bottom of the Allsvenskan . In 2014 , however, he was second to gain direct promotion. As twelfth of the Fotbollsallsvenskan 2015 they were able to keep the class and were able to avoid relegation in the 2016 season .

In 2016, I switched to the Grasshopper Club Zurich in Switzerland. During the 2017/18 winter break, it was awarded to FC St. Gallen for six months . After another season with Grasshoppers, he moved to Kazakhstan for free transfer to FK Astana in June 2019 , where he became Kazakh champions in 2019.

National team

Rúnar played relatively few games at junior level and never played for the Icelandic U-17 team. In 2008 he failed with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round of the U-19 European Football Championship in 2009 .

In 2011 and 2012 he was used in three qualifying games for the U-21 European Championship in 2013 .

In October 2012, at the age of 22, he was invited to the senior national team for the first time, but was not used in the World Cup qualifier against Switzerland . In the next game on November 14, 2012, a friendly against Andorra , he then made his debut for the national team. He played over 90 minutes and scored the goal to make it 2-0. He then had to wait 26 months for his next game and even then he was only used in friendly games, especially when only players from the Northern European leagues were available, as the games fell into the free time of these leagues and the dates did not belong to international match dates set by FIFA. In these games he only played three times for 90 minutes, on November 17, 2015 he was even substituted after 10 minutes.

On May 12, 2016 he was appointed to the squad for the 2016 European Championship by coach Lars Lagerbäck , who represented Iceland's men for the first time at a European Championship finals. But he was one of four field players in the team who were not used.

In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup , which began after the European Championship , he played his first competitive game against Kosovo on October 9, 2017, when he was substituted on in the 89th minute. It was his only appearance in qualifying, but he was on the bench eight more times. He was not nominated for the World Cup, for which the Icelanders had qualified for the first time. In the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League he was used in three of the four defeats. In qualifying for the 2020 European Football Championship , he was used in six games. In the end it was only enough for 3rd place. As the group opponents in the Nations League group qualified directly for the European Championship finals, the Icelanders still have the chance to qualify via the playoffs in March 2020.
