Rachel's Wedding (Original title: Rachel Getting Married ) is an American drama from 2008. Directed by Jonathan Demme , the screenplay was written by Jenny Lumet .

action

At the wedding of her sister Rachel, the alcoholic Kym, who is considered difficult and unstable, is released from rehabilitation for a few days and returns to her parents' house. The wedding party of friends and relatives of the family has already gathered there. The planned idyllic weekend will soon be disrupted by Kym. Not only does she turn the future bride against her with her biting, ironic remarks and her urge to be the center of attention. Suppressed memories are also awakened: A few years ago, while on a drug intoxication, Kym had caused a car accident in which her little brother Ethan was killed. She could not forgive herself for her brother's death and became addicted to alcohol. The family never forgave Kym. Her parents divorced soon after their only son died. Rachel, in turn, suffered from the fact that her addicted sister was always more noticed and cared for than she - even at her own wedding, Kym seems to be the focus alone. That in turn disturbs her father's addiction to control over her. Rachel perceives an apology from Kym in front of all the guests as a further attempt by Kym to flirt with her illness and to want to attract attention.

When Rachel learns while visiting the hairdresser that Kym has claimed during her time on addiction therapy that she, like her sister, had been raped by her uncle as a child - which made her what she was - Rachel is appalled and turns angry from Kym. Kym doesn't get a hold of her mother either, as she still blames her for her brother's death. After a violent argument in which her mother beats her, Kym drives around in the car and finally drives it into the forest against a rock. Only the next morning, Rachel's wedding day, is she found by the police and taken home. She has a black eye and abrasions on her face. Her sister bathes her and dresses her as a bridesmaid. Rachel's wedding went off without any problems, even if Kym stayed aloof. When the cake is cut, she is brought in as an integral part of the family.

The next morning, Kym is picked up by her rehabilitation supervisor. She says goodbye to Rachel, but not to her father.

Reviews

The film received a positive response from the critics. Claudia Puig wrote in USA Today : “Hathaway plays wonderfully. Their nervous laughs, their angularity and their temperament contrast convincingly with their need for attention and their vulnerability. Your character is recognizable and authentic, unlike the many other schematic Hollywood characters. "

Wesley Lovell wrote on August 3, 2008, based on the material available on www.oscarguy.com, that Anne Hathaway was looking better than ever.
