geography

location

The Rachelsberg rises in the western part of the Eichsfeld district. Its peak, about 650 m northeast of the Thuringian-Hessian border and in the municipality of Dietzenrode-Vatterode, is 1.5 km south of Weidenbach , 1.9 km southwest of Schwobfeld , 3.1 km northwest of Wiesenfeld , each about 4 km southeast of Dietzenrode and Vatterode and 2.5 km east of Asbach , a district of the municipality Asbach-Sickenberg . The closest towns are Bad Sooden-Allendorf , 6.5 km to the west, and Eschwege , 10.5 km to the south (both in the Werra-Meißner district), and Heilbad Heiligenstadt , 12 km to the north-northeast (in the Eichsfeld district ).

The completely wooded Rachelsberg is the most south-westerly and highest elevation of the small mountain plateau, to which the Dieberg (approx.  500  m ), Johannisberg (approx.  470  m ) and Großer Knüll (approx.  460  m ) belong and which extends northeast to the Hesselkopf ( 506  m ) adjoins:

To the north the plateau stretches to Dieberg and to the east to the Großer Knüll with the Kleine Knüll ( 391.8  m ) in front . Near the summit is the small crevice cave . To the northeast, the Johannisberg borders directly on the Eichenberg – Gotha – Saalfelder fault zone and further to the east the Schlittstein ( 416  m ) forms a rock formation made of dolomite with its bulge. The Altenstein castle ruins are located on a spur (approx.  350  m ) on the northwest slope in former Hessian territory . In the southwest, separated by the Hessellücke , is the Hesselkopf , where the main ridge of the Gobert begins to the south.

Natural allocation

The Rachelsberg is one of the northern foothills of the Gobert (no. 483.10), part of the north-western edge of the Thuringian basin (483), according to the natural spatial structure in the Kassel sheet . According to the structure within Thuringia ( The Natural Spaces of Thuringia ), it is assigned to the Werrabergland-Hörselberge unit.

Protected areas

Parts of the Obereichsfeld landscape protection area ( CDDA no. 390325; designated 2009; 384.7677  km² in size) and the fauna-flora-habitat area Stein – Rachelsberg – Gobert (FFH no. 4726-320; 7.16 km²) and the bird sanctuary Werrabergland southwest of Uder (VSG no. 4626-420; 84.33 km²).

Lookout point and hiking

A little southwest of the Rachelsberg summit, there is seating for hikers on the stratified level above a rock face made of shell limestone and a viewpoint to the southwest to the Gobert, into the Bad Sooden-Allerdorfer Werra Valley and the neighboring north-east Hessian mountainous region.

The Schlittstein is to be designated as part of the Geological Route of the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park . An information board already indicates the special geological conditions.
