Rainer Widmayer (born April 2, 1967 in Sindelfingen ) is a former soccer player . The midfielder began a coaching career after the end of his playing career .
Career
Playing career in second and third division
Widmayer began his football career in the youth of TSV Eltingen and SpVgg Renningen . In 1986 he moved to VfB Stuttgart , in whose amateur team he ran under coach Ralf Rangnick and his successor Walter Güntner in the third-class Oberliga Baden-Württemberg at the side of Thomas Epp , Eberhard Trautner , Ralf Allgöwer , Alexander Ogrinc and Axel Jüptner . After a season he returned to SpVgg Renningen, who played in the Württemberg League. After two seasons with the fourth division, he moved again to the league, this time he joined SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg . Under coach Rainer Adrion he was a regular player right away, in the 1990/91 season he and the team missed the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga as runner-up behind 1. FC Pforzheim . However, she qualified for the German amateur championship in 1991 , in which the group phase after duels with SpVgg Unterhaching , Rot-Weiss Frankfurt and Eintracht Trier was survived without losing points and thus the final against the amateur team from Werder Bremen was reached. With a 1: 2 defeat the Württemberger missed the title win.
In 1992 Widmayer moved to 1. FC Pforzheim after a disappointing eighth place in the league table . From here he went to league rivals TSF Ditzingen after only one season , which he left after successfully qualifying for the Regionalliga Süd after only one season for the upper division VfR Pforzheim . In 1995 he returned to SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg. After two seasons for the regional league team, he moved to league rivals SSV Ulm in 1846 . There he was under contract until 1999 and was therefore used after promotion to the second division . In total, he played 19 second division games. At the end of the season he announced the end of his career.
Activities as a trainer assistant in Germany and Switzerland
From July 2000, Widmayer was employed as an assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart and mainly worked for the club's second team. In January 2006 he moved to the Grasshopper Club Zurich to assist his former colleague from Stuttgart, Krassimir Balakow . At his second station in Switzerland, he was Balakow's assistant again from late October 2007 to May 2008 when he moved to FC St. Gallen . However, after relegation to the Challenge League , the coaching duo was released.
After Armin Veh's dismissal , Widmayer became the new coach of VfB Stuttgart on November 23, 2008 and is assistant to team boss Markus Babbel . On May 6, 2009 Widmayer signed a contract running until the end of June 2011 as an assistant coach at the side of head coach Babbel, who himself acquired the football instructor license. On December 6, 2009, he and Babbel were released from their duties at VfB.
On May 17, 2010 it was announced that he would again be Babbel's assistant coach at his new club, Hertha BSC . After his release on December 18, 2011, Widmayer looked after the team on an interim basis until the end of the year. In his only game he was able to lead Hertha to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup with a 3-1 win over 1. FC Kaiserslautern . After Michael Skibbe was signed as the new head coach, Widmayer left the club at his own request. Both parties agreed on this by mutual agreement. However, when he was introduced, Skibbe announced that he would like to work with Widmayer and that he would therefore seek a conversation with him. Widmayer turned down Skibbe's offer because he wanted to continue working with Markus Babbel in the future. On February 10, 2012, Widmayer and Babbel went to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . On December 3, 2012, like the head coach, he was released from his duties in Hoffenheim with immediate effect.
Then Widmayer sat in on various clubs, and he was also involved in training for the youth teams of TSV Eltingen , in which his sons played. After a long period without a permanent position in the professional field, he returned to Hertha BSC as assistant coach of Pál Dárdai on February 5, 2015. There he and the team reached the European Cup as sixth in the table at the end of the 2016/17 season , after two placements in the middle of the table in the following years, the cooperation between the club and the coaching team was ended in summer 2019.
In the 2019/20 season, Widmayer was again under contract as an assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart , who had meanwhile been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. He initially assisted head coach Tim Walter . After his release shortly before Christmas 2019, Widmayer remained assistant coach under Pellegrino Matarazzo , who was newly appointed in January . Since the collaboration did not work as planned, he was given leave of absence at the end of the season.
