Career

Randy Smith began his career as a hockey player with the Battleford Barons, for which he was active in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in the 1982/83 season . He then played from 1983 to 1986 for the Saskatoon Blades and Calgary Wranglers in the top junior Western Hockey League . Towards the end of the 1985/86 season , the center made its debut for the Minnesota North Stars in the National Hockey League . In his only NHL use of the season, he remained pointless and punished. In the 1986/87 season he played almost exclusively for Minnesota's farm team Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League , while he only came to two other NHL appearances for the North Stars. From 1987 to 1990 he played in various minor league teams and during this period he played for the Kalamazoo Wings and Salt Lake Golden Eagles from the International Hockey League and the Maine Mariners from the American Hockey League.

From 1990 to 1992 Smith participated with Team Canada in its Olympic preparation. Following the 1992 Winter Games, he ran towards the end of the 1991/92 season to seven missions for EHC Biel from the Swiss National League A , in which he scored one goal and five assists. The Canadian stayed in Europe for the 1992/93 season and played for the EC KAC from the Austrian Ice Hockey League . For the 1993/94 season he joined the IHL team Las Vegas Thunder before continuing his career in Great Britain. There he first played in the 1994/95 season for the Peterborough Pirates from the British Hockey League . He then moved within the BHL to the Cardiff Devils , with whom he took part in the newly founded Ice Hockey Superleague in the 1996/97 season . In this he played in the 1997/98 season for the Newcastle Cobras . Most recently, he played for the Peterborough Pirates from the second-rate British National League from 1998 to 2000 before ending his career at the age of 35. In the 1994 and 1995 seasons he also took part with the St. Louis Vipers in the professional inline hockey league Roller Hockey International , which, unlike ice hockey, was held in the summer.

From 2000 to 2003 Smith was active as an assistant coach for the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League. For the 2003/04 season he was promoted to head coach of the team with whom he was eliminated in the first playoff round at the end of the season.
